Sony DSCHX50 feedback anyone?

Afternoon all,

Not been very active in this section recently, summer here doesn't lend itself to photos

My brother has just sent me a link to the above camera, asking for my advice on whether I think it is a good buy.

Completely out of touch with what is hot and not in the P&S world, I still use a D90, does anyone have any feedback on this particular model and alternatives at a similar price point?

nb - I have already asked what he wants out of it, will try and push him towards an entry level (or used) dSLR

For a few quid less he can pick up a Canon S100, my gut feeling is that will be a better all rounder?

Or a few more for a Panasonic DMC-LX7.

I'd recommend a Lumix TZ40

Love mine - I have a bag full of Nikon kit, but use the TZ40 alot, small, quick and give good results in iAuto mode, before you start 'fiddling' into the settings.

The fact it's got WiFi to link to a smartphone for full remote control & picture transfer, as well as GPS for geolocating pictures make it a no brainer in my book ;-)

One word of advice, whichever P&S he gets, get a spare battery or two...

He has resisted my pushing towards a used dSLR so have sent him my alternative including yours above which does have some more zoom than the others.

I'm thousands of miles away so can't pop anywhere with him for a look see.
