Will be taking a trip in the Vantage this Sept. to Stresa in Italy, Will take the Simplon pass from Brig in Switzerland, my car is fitted with a speed trap detector, should I remove it before trip?, i understand they are illegal in France, however, my iphone has a Sat nav app that also warns of speed cameras....is that illegal too?

Forget the Simplon its boring, try the Gross Glockner wink
Leave the detector at home big fines for using them
Now "warning of safety zones" is fine that's how Tom Tom get round it.
Don't forget all the other gumf you need wink

Simplon is a truck route - try the Grimsel/Nufenen - quieter and much more interesting; drops you at the top of lake Maggiore.

I hear what your saying re- the Simplon pass, however the wife is a recovering Agoraphobic and this will be her first time abroad for 30 years, dont want to get her too exited, thought the Simplon would be a good intro to the Alps.

In which case I suggest you go over using the Simplon, which is mostly a wide road, an easy grade and not at all scary, and come back another way.

Its both these days. Detectors have always been illegal. They've now made it illegal to have Sat Nav's locating / warning of fixed speed cameras. All the major SatNav manufacturers have released updated maps of France without fixed speed camera locations.

Crazy. so if you have a passenger next to you with a map showing the fixed speed camera's ( which they issue monthly) is that illegal as well. Bonkers .Having checked my Sat Nav I can switch it on or off. Needless to say on a recent trip I had it on.

I went over to Italy in June and my vantage sat nav picked up all the speed camera's (and in france!).

Can or would they really chase you back to the UK for speeding fines on fixed camera's?

No, not yet. But if they stop you they can fine you and confiscate the SatNav. Which would be interesting to see with a built in one. Perhaps like the Beaune 4 they will just confiscate your licence.

maybe /maybe not - a few years back all my data was input to Interpol after the police set up a road block to question me ( and friend) after a rather classy overtake manoeuvre involving two artic lorries, a rather nice bend and a solid white line in the middle of the road.
My only problem was the two police bikes coming in the opposite direction as I was about to complete the manoeuvre. Despite having the same birthday as the commander in chief I thought I might get off ( but didn't) .A severe ticking off , a 95 euro fine , 15 minutes in the car for documentation issues and I was on my way - after the obligatory photo

Something is wrong here, interpol are mobilised for a traffic offence, yet pedos walk free from our courts, people that question Islam are Prosecuted as racist, we are fed Halal meat whether you like it or not.....I hate this country, run by greedy PC bankers....bring back the Thatch!!!

YOUR COMMENT IS PROBABLY A PLAY ON WORDS. IF SO, IGNORE THE FOLLOWING.

Contenders for 'worst of the greedy award', from 2005 to September 2007, must be those who kept quiet about the escalating debt binge. Many governments, lenders and borrowers all joined the temporary best 'party' in history, inevitably followed by the biggest 'boom hangover' in financial history.

The beneficiaries of that boom were so widespread (from everyone involved with the property market, to governments collecting bulging tax receipts), that no one wanted it to end, and hence gave no warnings.

We were then repeatedly told, "No one saw it coming". If you believe that, well ......

When you arrive in Italy, ask them how the finances are going (stand well back).

[By the way, my only connection with banks is an investment in two companies, neither of which made losses, or needed any outside help. So there are some banks run better than others.]

Oh, and enjoy your trip. It sounds really good.
