E63 M6 / M models generally - warranty confusion
Discussion
Hello all.
Got another thread running about buying a 2008 BMW AUC (Approved Used Car) M6 with press preparation, but got a couple of question about BMW warranties on their M models and specifically the E63 M6 (I have done a bit of searching, promise).
I assume when the car was created and first sold it came with a full warranty, but I don't know how long it would have lasted (5 years? 7 years? No idea!). The car has then passed between a couple of owners, and I assume that original warranty would have just transferred to each of them, winding down to whatever the length of the original warranty was.
I'm about to purchase it from BMW Cooper Cobham as an AUC, and they are offering to give it to me with a two year extended warranty which sounds pretty good for a 5 year old car, but as you can see I don't really understand any of the context so I can't be sure. So I've got a couple of questions:
1) How long is an original BMW warranty for on an M model?
2) Can it be cancelled (i.e. if serviced by an non BMW dealership) during it's life?
3) Is the extended warranty I will get as an AUC any different to the original warranty, or it is just a continuation of the original warranty?
4) For how long can I continue to extend the warranty in the future, and how much is this likely to cost me?
5) Are there different levels of warranty and cover?
Apologies if people feel this has been covered before, but there were so many separate threads I was getting a bit confused!
Thanks in advance.

1) Standard 3 year warranty as far as I knowGot another thread running about buying a 2008 BMW AUC (Approved Used Car) M6 with press preparation, but got a couple of question about BMW warranties on their M models and specifically the E63 M6 (I have done a bit of searching, promise).

2) Yes, it can be null and voided but I'm sure people would and could argue mitigating circumstances.
3) It should be the same as the original warranty but they may argue 'wear and tear' though if it an extended warranty - be careful.
4) Upto 100,000 I believe
5) Just AUC really - the best type.
2) Can it be cancelled (i.e. if serviced by an non BMW dealership) during it's life?
You do not have to have it serviced at an approved BMW dealership, this will not null and void the warranty. You do have to have all warranty work carried out by an approved dealership though.
As said the servicing aspect will not affect it but such things as modifications will, be careful here. Any mods you may think about ensure you discuss first to see if any issues.

Couple of additions here
1.) Servicing at a non BMW dealer is fine so long as genuine parts are used
2.) You can get a warranty up to 100k miles - but - you start to get restrictions on the kind of cover - not sure when exactly but there comes a point when you can only get a drivetrain warranty.
Also - there is a big leap in costs at 60k miles - if your AUC warranty runs out before you hit 60k get a Mondial warranty on Monthly payments and then you won't get stung when you go over 60k.
The wear and tear items are pretty clearly listed.

Thanks everyone. So just so I am clear and to summarise:
1) How long is an original BMW warranty for on an M model?
Standard 3 year warranty (as far as is known)
2) Can it be cancelled (i.e. if serviced by an non BMW dealership) during it's life?
Yes, it can be null and voided for a variety of reasons, but you can argue mitigating circumstances. However, you do NOT have to have it serviced at an approved BMW dealership, so long as genuine BMW parts are used, the warranty can't be cancelled.
If you do have any issues with the car whilst under warranty, the work needs to be carried out by an approved dealership though. And mods you need to discuss with them first to see if they will allow them.
3) Is the extended warranty I will get as an AUC any different to the original warranty, or it is just a continuation of the original warranty?
It should be the same as the original warranty but they may argue 'wear and tear' though if it an extended warranty.
4) For how long can I continue to extend the warranty in the future, and how much is this likely to cost me?
Up to 100k miles - but - you start to get restrictions on the kind of cover.
At some point only drive train warranty available
Big leap in costs at 60k miles - if your AUC warranty runs out before you hit 60k get a Mondial warranty on Monthly payments and then you won't get stung when you go over 60k.
5) Are there different levels of warranty and cover?
Just AUC - no other levels. The wear and tear items are pretty clearly listed.
Got a couple of other questions:
A) What is a Mondial warranty?
B) Was Googling and found this page on BMW's site (https://www.bmw-warranty.co.uk/)
It has 3 levels, COMPREHENSIVE, NAMED COMPONENT and DRIVELINE. Are these only available when you purchase a new model? Or does this system also apply to AUC warranties as well? I've asked the dealership, but no response as yet.
C) Does anyone know what the warranty extensions cost?
1) How long is an original BMW warranty for on an M model?
Standard 3 year warranty (as far as is known)
2) Can it be cancelled (i.e. if serviced by an non BMW dealership) during it's life?

The BMW warranty you found is what we call a mondial warranty. It's the official BMW extended warranty run on their behalf by mondial.
If you type the reg number of the car you are thinking of into the box on the quote page you'll get prices for that car.
But PHONE them as I got way better prices over the phone than the website displayed.

You biggest worry should be bearing wear, before 50k miles in some cases:1) How long is an original BMW warranty for on an M model?

BMW Monidal extended warranty can be bought annually or continuous (monthly installments). At 100k miles you can only take out Driveline therefore if you have annually when you come to renew each year after 100k miles, your option will change (comp or named to driveline)
If you have continuos policy (paid monthly installments) the policy does not run out therefore your comp or named policy can continue forever if you keep paying.
If you have continuos policy (paid monthly installments) the policy does not run out therefore your comp or named policy can continue forever if you keep paying.

I thought if u pay monthly and pass 100k u are automatically transferred from comprehensive cover or named cover to driveline cover ????If you have continuos policy (paid monthly installments) the policy does not run out therefore your comp or named policy can continue forever if you keep paying.
