It's got the x50 aerokit from the factory, but guess it must not be the higher bhp version
X50 is as someone has correctly pointed out, the 450hp upgrade, it has nothing to do with the aerokit.
Official Turbo S came with PCCB's X50 upgrade and some other trinkets which wouldn't interest me.
I owned both X50 and non X50 996 Turbos, and I would go X50 every time now - the power delivery is simply intoxicating.
There is a little more lag, but the rewards are well worth it.
Aerokit is more a matter of personal taste, but it does mean you will never be faced with a 4 figure repair bill for the spoiler actuators on the non Aero cars!
ETA: The official 'Turbo S' was '54' plate on.

I'd agree X50 is no biggie, as it adds more lag than power, but PCCBs are awesome!!
I don't recall anyone saying the X50 was no biggie ? It'd be my choice every time, not only does the extra Hp make for a far quicker feeling car, the turbos and intercoolers allow greater initial gains without having to go to the expense of fitting upgraded replacements.shantybeater said:
I also heard the x50 has a stronger gearbox and clutch, can't confirm authenticity on that though!
It has a different clutch to the non-X50; not sure it's that much stronger though. I still expect to have to replace it if I get my car remapped. The gearbox is exactly the same as the standard car, as far as many people have said, although there are some different part numbers - the experts say there's no discernible difference when you take them apart. The GT2 and X50 also have a different oil pump. Strangely the exhaust also has a different part number, but plenty of people say they're identical; more confusion like the gearbox internals! Main changes are the larger turbos and intercoolers, although the intercoolers aren't enough of an improvement over standard not to be the bottleneck once you start remapping. The real value comes from the little 'S' badge on the back and the bragging rights about limited production. That's worth an extra 5 grand in anyone's book, surely?

As an X50 owner let me clarify a few points:
1. Lag is a theoretical phenomenon. The car goes like a ballistic missile - especially in 3rd gear. Theoretically larger turbos in X50 should = more lag to spool up. In practice a non-issue.
2. The Turbo S was the Last of the Mohicans at the tail-end of the 996 life cycle around 2005 if I remember correctly. It had the X50 plus cermics all round (yellow calipers on the brakes give it away). There was Turbo S on the sill-plate and a S badge on the dash. Apart from that it is a 996 Turbo X50.
3. Some dealers do advertsie Turbo S when they mean 996 Turbo (with or without X50)with an automatic gearbox called a Tiptronic S. That does not make it a Turbo S, so buyer beware!
4. If the car has ceramics (Turbo S) check out the cost of replacing the ceramic discs and pads - you'll need smelling salts to bring you out of unconsciousness!Last I looked a complete set of replacement discs and pads for ceramics is c£15k compared to steel rotors and ordinary pads at c£2k.
Hope these comments are helpful.
