Running much smoother with no air filter

Last night i decided to clean the air filter, it is the foam filter impregnated with oil type. Cleaned it and left it to dry.
This morning was so nice i decided to take Trevor to work but i couldn't be bothered to frig around oiling and fitting the air filter so i went without it.

What a difference, , it runs as smooth as a sewing machine, (already made a small improvement by removing and blanking the vacuum advance).
Has anybody else found this happen or is it just because it was really cold this morning i.e. frosty.

If it is the air filter does anybody know of a direct replacement from K&N or similar, I've gone right off the standard one.

K&N filter will need cleaning also, but you can replace every week if you so wish - its a free world, if you have deep pockets:-).

Personally I have both, the original goes back on whilst I clean the K&N (every 3000 / 3 months just cos its easier to keep clean)

Erm, I wouldn't run my car without an air filter personally, since then there would be nothing to filter out all the nasty particles that can damage your engine and which the filter is designed to intercept...

I used a degreaser that i had in the garage

What's the improvement in using a high spec air fiter such as K&N, over the standard?

Also, are they easy to fit?

every car i have owned i have put K & N filter in, Huge difference in induction roar rather than out and out speed, Probably going to cost you about £50 quid or you could try J & R filters for about £30 but i would not recomend cleaning too often about every year i blow mine out with an air line( remember to blow the right way i.e. push the dirt back out not in) You really only need to clean these filter every 50k or so. Mine have paid for themselves in fuel and filter replacement, I even put one i had on a metro once as you just put them in and forget about it. but for gods sake put something back on

Don't run without an air filter. It is amazing how much grit and dust can be ingested in a short time. As well as potentially damaging the top of the engine on the way through, it is possible for it to get carried into the oil where it can do a lot more damage. If your air filter was causing enough restriction to be noticeable then there is something seriously wrong with it.

Hmm, not sure everyones talking about the same car, the air filter location on the Chimaera whilst excellent at getting cold air, also attracts crud incredibly quickly. This is why I blow mine out (very gently), brush off (soft paint brush) and lightly oil very regularly. These methods are not recommended by K&N - but I dont think they have many applications with air filters behaving like a cross between a vacuum cleaner and road sweeper at the front of the car! Rotating the filter frequently ensures even 'wear'. When its mainly black (once a year) I give it the full clean, bath, dry, oil. I brush the oil on lightly with a 1/2" soft brush. Too much oil & the filter darkens very quickly, but in any case you can see the build up within 4 weeks, maybe we have dirty roads up North or I drive on particulalry bad ones.

Having cleaned out all the gunge which collects in front of the rad and behind the grill I would say that running without a filter is surely a recipe for engine disaster.

Being a tight git I bought the Green cleaner & oil kit.

Anybody know what the original fittings is from, ie Range Rover perhaps? or do i just ask for one to fit a 98 Chimaera

Yep there is a K&N filter cleaning kit (or a green one if you have one of those), comes with a degreaser type spray followed by a wash then dry then apply oil (I prefer the spray) use sparingly IMHO.
If you have the standard filter which is a foam lump caked in engine type oil it is probably easier to throw it away . Not unknown for the engine to eat lumps of the foam as it gets older .

Peter, its only a couple of miles to my office so I'm not too worried at this stage.
My air filter must have been seriously clogged, i don't think it had been cleaned in a long time.

If you take your old filter into Halfrauds they can take mesurments and match up, as can most good motorfactors

The only place i know for a replacement K&N filter is RT Racing in Sheffield. Speak to Richard.
He is the sole distributor for them as they were made for him as a special.
The filter oil is K&N and is red in colour. Only need to clean it every 50K. Think this is Kilometres.
Do not run without a filter. The amount of dust and grit that gets in even on a short journey will amaze you.
Most of the large lumps will get caught in the gauze on the inlet sde of the air flow meter.

Tim at ACT stocks the 'right' size and shape to fit Yiv's, if you are local I know Austec hold some in stock too .
