Dont waste money replacing all those coroded manifold and turbo exhaust shield nuts with genuine spares they wont last long, use stainless steel ones. The main problem if doing diy as i did is removing the old ones if theres anything left of them,i will cover ease of removal later.

Great thread and certainly something I plan on embarking on.

Can you list bolt/nut specs of what you replaced and where you sourced them?

I also noticed my exhaust manifold bolts are quite corroded, are you replacing those also?

P.S thanks for taking the time to make this, it will help DIYers like myself alot!

Hmmm.

Using SS is not always a good idea.

This will cause the "weaker" metal to corrode faster, which would be the studs. Unless you replaced those as well.

IMHO.

To gain access to the heat shields
1-remove rear bumper including wheel arch liners
2-remove intercoolers, these need to come out compete with mounting brackets attatched
3-remove side exhaust heat shields(only 2 fastners on each but tricky to get to)
4- this will allow lots of room to get to all 4 turbo /exhaust nuts, 3of which hold the turbo heat shield on
Removal of corroded nuts
1-spray nut with loctite freeze/release spray, this takes them down to minus 43 degrees and not only microscopically cracks the rust bond between nut and stud but also lubricates adding further ease.same method can be done with an oxy/acetylene torch just heat them instead if your brave
2-remvove nuts using a good quality nut/bolt grip removal tool as a13mm spanner will most likely just spin - (Irwin makes these and can be readily got of the net) i got two sets because some had to be shortened to allow them to fit in,and ones where space is tight put a hardened square drive in the tool end and use a ratchet spanner an this. Some studs may come out stuck with nuts on, just replace with Porsche ones as they are hardened.i wasn’t to concerned with mixing to dissimilar steels as galvanic corrosion is worse with steels/alloys etc
Replacement s was m8 stainless nuts with stainless washers these were also used on the manifold/turbo fasteners 14 in total
Good luck!
