Came in on the red eye from Belfast this morning, could have swore I saw an A319 in Air Canada livery sitting at T1, can someone confirm if I was dozing/dreaming?!

No you weren't dreaming. It's been a. Regular during the last 2 or 3 summers. Does a trip to Halifax, or Gander. Can't remember which.

If a biz jet can cross the Atlantic with ease, there's no reason why these smaller airliners can't.

I'm guessing small airlines like an A319 don't have the range with max passengers/cargo.

Or they aren't often equipped with the right length of ETOPS endurance.

Or passengers just want something bigger when crossing an ocean wink

The A£19/320s don't have the range (inc reserve for stacking) to go from LHR to JFK in one hop. BA fly London City, refuel at Shannon and then on to JFK and I can see that the Air Canada flight would go LHR - Gander - Toronto / Montreal. BA's lfight is 100% business class

While BA are refuelling the Self Loading Frieght do US immigration at Shannon, saving them hours at JFK. This is all aimed at cutting down the centre to centre journey time and is effective apparently.

The Air Canada flights on the A319 go to St Johns (YYT) this is a distance of approximately 2300 miles which is about 5 hours flying time, well within the range of the aircraft. They have 14 business and 106 economy seats iirc.

I thought that the take-off weight of the BA A318 is limited by the short runway at LCY and that's why it isn't able to carry enough fuel for the whole trip to JFK.

Yes, but doesn't the jet stream give a bit of assistance on the way back? I don't know how marginal the headwind makes the westbound leg even with a long runway.

I fly Halifax to Heathrow on Air Canada a week next Wednesday. 23:45, get in about 9am local time. No idea what type plane though.

At a guess a Boeing 767-300 looking at previous aircraft usage on this route.

..... You should see the state of folk getting off it.

Uniteds B757 ARN - EWR has been known to have to stop to refuel in a big headwind. They fly them from Germany too, I've heard the last few rows are blocked for weight restrictions.

IIRC Air Canada did this several years ago. The first time the 'tiddler' landed it was lke a twitchers meet at Heathrow
