Where's the best place to get the ATF oil for the gearbox chaps?
Opie can do an equivalent but thought I'd see if I can get the Mobil original.
Cheers

Well this is just my opinion but I have always used Dexron 3 until recently when I serviced the box and tried kosher manual multi-grade trans oil but the shift cold is notchier and not as slick hot so needless to say its coming out and Dexron 3 is going back in scratchchin why do we bother rolleyes as I have said before any oil that can withstand the punishment of an auto-trans is good enough for me bow

+1, but has anyone tried a quality 10w 40 engine oil as I have used it in trucks, and curious about it in car boxes.

Engine oil is not able to withstand the shear forces that a gear set exerts, its not designed for that application.

I am sure that Allison agree that it is a substitute in their auto boxes and Isuzu use it in their manual boxes, but as I say I have never used it in a car. I use the red stuff in my box also but was just curious, that was all. smile

Cobblers tongue out Honda recommended only engine oil in there passenger cars gearboxes from day dot up until the mid nineties they have roller/pin bearings and helical cut gears and are bullet proof wink no oil pumps either or silly troughs or funnels rolleyes
I thought that I had heard of it in cars but was unsure. If a 7500kg truck box can handle it then a 1000kg car should have no problem. As I say, I was only curious as to the application in our boxes

Not so wink engine oil was used in all manual Honda passenger vehicles from the early seventies until the mid nineties these had helical gears and roller bearings as do many other gearboxes, however box service interval were every 24k (no harm in that) biggrin Hi Jamie I actually edited my last post because I did not want Rigga to think I was being nasty frown

Well my experience from working for a manufacturer was different, but as always use what is recommended for the particular application you have in mind. smile

That's cool mate. I don't think the use of ATF/ engine oil is really worth arguing over.
That's the beauty of chim owners, between us all we know an awful lot (mostly poo in my case though) and we can share this to improve, modify and repair most things on our cars.
And i'm sure rigga would not have taken offence anyway as you used the word "Cobblers" and not "bks". hehe

Surely, given the context a wooden Last would be more appropriate.

Just to make a constructive (ish) comment for once, does Dexron III have a GL rating like the Diff oils do. I'm sure that is the rating which denotes the speed and torque load qualities of the oil.
Without wishing to get off topic , I use a 75/90 fully synth in my GKN diff, but specifically one with a GL5 rating I'm guessing diff loads would be similar to gearbox loads in which case you would think any oil designated for gearbox use would be rated as such.

Unless its the Rover LT77 box. I`ve tried everything in the LT77 and Mobil 1 engine 0w40 is by far the best. Just change it regularly.

Ill reply its not that suitable then ........ but revert to my caveat posted above regarding using what's recommended for the application.

I've got the same spec ATF in mine and its been fine for 9 hardish years, I have the Silkolene stuff from Opie but from what I can see its the same spec as that Mobil stuff.
