Hi

While I have my gearbox out I'm considering getting the diff re-built.

The diff was out around six months ago getting polybushed so I don't think I have to worry about siezed or stubbourn bolts etc..

Before I bite off more than I can chew though, can someone offer me some insight on this type of job?
- Do I need any special tools or are there any parts that I would need to replace as they're only used once etc?

Any and all advice would be most welcome!

Best wishes

Do you mean parts to rebuild it or remove and refit.

To remove and refit, new prop bolts and a few Nylocs and that's about it.

For the Diff, depends if anything is worn.

Unlikely you'll get it apart without BIG tools or breaking it. As for reassembly, a new preload crush washer and some engineers blue and you're away.

Thanks Ridds

Just remove and refit.

I'll send it off to get refurbished.

I replaced the diff prop bolts last year, but wouldn't do any harm to get a new set.

Will look into those Nyloc washers as well.

EDIT: was actually referring to nord-lock washers!

Remove oil.
Unbolt driveshafts.
Unbolt prop (probably already done if you've already got the 'box off).
Support diff.
Remove output flanges (just pull off)
Unbolt front mounting plates.
Disconnect rear speedo sensor.
Unbolt rear mounting bolt/bracket.
Drop diff on part of body.
Swear profusely.

As above. A decent trolley jack with a good sized saddle will help keep it square during removal/refitting, but it isn't such a horrendous job.

Diff came out fairly easily.
Off to CTS in the morning for a refresh.
Heavy awkward lump isn't it.

Yeah it's a prick of a thing, almost impossible to get it in or out of the car on your own

That's it! Not technically difficult, just hard work.

I really really didn't want to take the diff out.
I was under the car earlier this week looking at the little leak on the output shaft.
And I was going to leave it alone.

But I'm glad I did get it over to CTS.

The pinion bearing was damaged. So it could have disintegrated..

It's now fully refurbished with 9 new bearings and three new sealssmile

Did they check the LSD packs whilst there? Or is yours a torsion diff?

That looks as if water has pooled on the surface and corroded it over time. Has your car ever stood for a long time? As in a couple of years?

I've been meaning to try and get in touch with the previous owner.. not sure if it was but that is definite possibility.

The reconditioned diff went in lastnight (Monday) and the polybushes are less than 1yr old. Glad that's sorted as it's a hard job to do with the car on axle stands.
