X-Type - Buyers Guide? Stuff to know?
Discussion
Hi All,
Seriously considering a X-type for my new motorway mile muncher and was looking for some general info and hints and tips etc.
Is there a decent buyers guide out there?
I'd be looking at a manual diesel estate.
I'm told the 2.2 is actually better than the 2.0? Is this correct?
What sort of economy should I expect on a lengthy run at around 75 mph? maybe a little more?
Budget woudl be around £6k
Is there any reason to buy newer models than an older one?
I'm going to be piling the miles onto it so if I could spend 3k on a slightly older one then i'd be more than happy than blowing 6k just to get an 07 plate or something.
Thanks in advance!

As said, there's a good source of info on jaguar forum and if you do a search on piston heads you'll find a few others.
However, in short, the rear suspension is made of cheese, so listen for knocks and clunks and vagueness round corners. Check the handbrake works properly as the rear calipers wear early. The rest isn't too bad tbh. A diesel will only be fwd so you don't have to worry about the transfer box / coupling. Check the sills carefully as they do rust. Diesel is pretty solid by all accounts. Can't tell you about mpg coz mine's a 3 litre petrol.

I've just bought one off my brother. 55-plate 2.2 diesel estate manual with 56k on the clock for £4k. Does what it says on the tin, and munches miles. So far no issuess other than low-speed rear brake groaning a little. May have to file the lip down on the discs at some point.
I've seen newer models at dealers for stupid money -£9k & £10k.
They're not particularly economical when pushed, having said that, I've just averaged 41mpg from a tank of fast motorway miles of about. 0.8 - 0.9 leptons.

I've had my 55 plate 2.2d estate for nearly 5 years & driven over 70k miles in it, many of them towing. This is the longest i've ever kept a car & shows how much i like it.
Bad points are not brilliant fuel comsumption 35mpg urban & 45 on a run. Can just about manage 50mpg if your really careful on the motorway. Front tyres dont last long.
I've had no diesel related issues on mine but later ones have a motor driven egr valve which can fail. Look for evidence of regular diesel filter changes with the correct denso filter used. Cheapo ones can cause injector failure so i was told by a diesel specialist.
As stated above rear suspension can knock & if lower control arms are worn then rear tyres will wear their inside edges so check for this. That said the arms are cheap & quickly fitted so its no big deal. My car has had arms on both sides and anti roll bar bushes in its time & is fine now.
All in all mine has proved totally reliable & easy to own. Would recommend one in a flash. Beware base S & sport models as these were poorly equipped unless the first owner ticked the options list. Mines a sport premium with all the toys.
Honest John says they're not recommended for towing. Thats rubbish they make great tow cars & the electrics are not complicated so dunno where he gets that from.

Hello. I have had two, an 07 and an 08. 2.2 diesels and both sport premiums.
Both have been to LeMans, Paris, Normandy and twice to the middle of Italy loaded to the gunnels with family and luggage - Fabulous and effortless. Approx 550 miles from a tankful.
Only things gone wrong are the EGR Valves on both cars and yes the rear on the 08 is a bit "bonky" after the Italian road surfaces.........!!!!!!!! (Literally just got back on Sunday)
I would recommend the Jag 2.2 X type completely.
Cheers.

I run a 2.2 d sport estate. Have run it for 5 years as a 40 mile a day round trip A road commuter. I average 44mpg driving at the NSL that is brimming the tank and taking the mileage at every fill up (I know I am sad!)
Best MPG was on a 600 mile round trip to Manchester and it managed 48mpg at motorway speeds.
Had a few problems its heavy on front springs & front tyres had to replace the turbo at 70k jag wanted £1200 to supply the turbo. Got a reconditioned one and had fitted all in for £700.
All in its a nice place to sit & and has a decent amount of mid range grunt.
Cr@p in the snow with the large wheels but I have never been stuck.
