Reversing the effects of service pack 2
Discussion
I installed windows XP service pack 2 this morning and it has pretty much crippled my PC.
Is there any way that I can uninstall it.
Also since then my USB hard drive has stopped functioning, we tried it on another computer and it says that it needs Formatting. Does this mean that I'll lose the info on it if I click yes???
There is 80Gb of stuff on it, so obviously I want it back
Is this out of my hands??
Help! I'm a complete computer numpty and I am scared!

Formatting the USB drive will lose your contents...
With regard to removing SP2 - I had to do it the other day, using the recovery console, that was fun...
To remove - Information here - recovery console is the last resort really, try the other method first

I'd try taking the USB harddrive out of its case and connecting it directly via your IDE interface inside the puter, see if its an interface problem.
If not then theres bound to be some recovery software around that may help. Unless the drive has been formated several times you can always get some of the data back - may cost some tho.

If you plugged it into another computer and it suggested your format, that could be for any number of reasons - for example, if it's running older versions of windows (eg 98) it may not be compatible.
I would go back to the restore point first - if that doesn't work, look into software that can recover data as someone else has suggested.
Otherwise, if it's a USB hard disk it can likely as has been mentioned be taken out and plugged directly into an IDE channel - this might help too...
All is not lost! (hopefully)
