I know the 'What oil' question has been done to death and I think Valvoline VR 20/50 comes out at or close to the top.

My question is, does that still apply to a rebuilt engine? New bearings and rings all round so less wear for the 'thick' oil to fill.

Would a thinner oil be better or still best to stick to the 20/50?

Thanks and apologies in advance.

Thanks but its been running in on mineral for the past 1500 miles since the rebuild. I think I now need to change to conventional and was wondering what's best.

There's also a 5w50 variant of VR1, fully synth, if you want quicker cold circulation. Euro car parts generally stock it

Have been using Castrol Edge 10/60 full synthetic for the last 10 years, still on same cam (not it isn't fugged), never once needed a top up in between oil changes ......... it must be doing something right.

X1. Same here. Will try Penrite 15/60 with good zinc next and less cash out.

Shell recommend their Helix Racing 10 w60 fully synth for the Chimaera. But then they are hardly going to recommend Mobil 1, are they?

I'm going to go with the Valvoline VR1 20/50 for now. It's done 1500 miles since the rebuild so I think a bit more mineral would be good.

I can then have another think about what to use next spring when its next change will be due.

Thanks all.

Unless you need it here and now keep an eye open at Halfords. They often do some good deals on Oil with fairly hefty discounts.

I've been using the 10w60 Mobil Extended life. They've had some good deals on at Halfrauds. Fernhurst recommended any quality 10/15w 60 fully synthetic type oil.

This yes Been using it for 2 years almost and would highly recommend it.

60 psi on cold start up and no lower than 45psi even when mad hot!
Those readings are with the very highly recommended ebay special oil sender.
