....as the Actress said to the Bishop

Just found out about my missing 3rd gear and apparently the gear has split in half!!!

Has any one heard of this before?
Have I been thrashing it a bit too much?

I just count myself lucky that the broken bits didn't jam in the gearbox and cause damage
on the 200 miles home from the Wedge Fest

Apparently £350 to replace the gear, replace a few other bits that are slightly worn
and put all back together with new oil, bearings and seals etc
(This doesn't include my mechanics time to take out and put back)

Very lucky you didnt end up on a transporter with a completely lunched gearbox there mate. In the circumstances £350 is getting off lightly.

Dicky - considering the nature of the fault - that's quite a result! I remember advising you at the fest to just drive it - it might come back. Well I'm glad it didn't bugger anything else up!!!

Can you get the bits back - it would be interesting to see piccies etc.

Quite interesting that the rest of the gears stayed in place and operated OK. If the broken bits were quite large and just dropped to the bottom of the box there wouldn't be much extra harm done, I would have thought.

Thanks Adam

I have already asked for the bits back so will post up pics asap

They are refurbing the rest of the gearbox - but say the rest is virtually fault free
just changing bushes and washers etc as a matter of course

At least I know that all should be OK once it is all back in
and apparently the clutch is fine as well

Not a bad result at 70000 miles

Cheers

Dickie - the cluths might be OK but the cover plate could be getting tired if it's as old as the car - they are only 20-30 quid so well worth changing unless it's been done recently.

Dickie,

My clutch started slipping at abt 92000 miles (I think it was the original clutch).
Friction plate was good with plenty of material, but cover plate springs must have got a bit weak.

Update Adam

I called at my mechanics yesterday as he was putting the gearbox back in
(with a new clutch - to be on the safe side while it was all out)

He showed me the broken gear. It is actually the synchro that has parted from the gear
I understand that they are "Friction Welded" together and never come apart!!!
The gearbox guys said they had never seen this happen before
They have also replaced a couple more synchros (1st and 2nd I think)as well as the thrust bearing and all oils and seals etc

Apparently my car is now out on test drive - also with the new petrol sender that I got at the Fest from the David Geralds guys

Hope to be at a Help4Heroes Charity at Sherburn (where BNG 2012 was) on Sunday

Cheers
Rich

PS Please don't laugh at my technical knowledge!!!!!
