Just after quick bit of advice, the brake pads on my e92 m3 are due to be changed. The brake discs look fine bar a small lip at the edge of the disc..... Is it an inevitability that the discs will need replacing too? Or will pads only be fine?

Do you change discs with every pad change?

Depends how big the lip is, you need to measure the discs and then access whether they will still be above their minimum when this set of pads your putting in need replacing.

As a general rule a disc will run 2 sets of pads and then need replacing.

Had my first brake disc change, front and back, at c68k miles. No track days, very expensive even after going to an Indy!

Yours is exactly the same mileage as mine (no track days either) I've budgeted for discs..... Just don't want my pants pulled down for no reason!

Define small lip. Generally I find, if there's a clearly noticeable lip by touch the discs are done.

Why not just measure the thickness of the disc to see if it has reached its minimum?

Get them skimmed, then change pads.

At the next brake change....changd your discs then along with pads.

my e90 discs/pads changed yesterday at a dealer - £1400 - car has done 52k miles - fronts had a lip - rears were marginal. edited to mention that on obc - discs now are reckoned to have another 50k miles

Cheers all, will give them a proper measure. Lip is small in my eyes but I suspect large in the dealers eyes!

£1400 is steep even for a main dealer.

I rang for a quote on an M5 discs and pads all around and they dropped the price from £1200 to just over a grand when I told I had seen Ocean BMW offer cheaper on Ebay.

They have massive margins. You just have to push for concessions. They dont want to turn business away

Amazing how dealer prices differ.... I didn't think £1400 was to bad. I've been quoted by a variety of dealers of between £1600 and £1690 for discs pads all round (not London either, notts/Peterborough area)

m3 - trade friend sorted it for me who put a lot of business through dealer and gets a discount - not sure if price is after or before discount - local indies apparently about the same - and it has warranty etc, wasn't sure if not doing it through dealer would have invalidated warranty - anyway wanted it done that day as i have covered a lot of miles in it this week - as OP has researched it is in the ballpark.
