What Filter for a newbie

Just bought the Canon 15-85mm, my most expensive late to date and I want to protect it and also help on bright days by using a filter.

But I dont know where to start.

UV?

Polarising?

Digital

Most photos will be motorsport, city snapping and holidays.

Wouldn't bother for protection. A lens hood will do much more to protect it from knocks than a filter. UV filters generally just degrade the image quality and cause more flare.

However a circular polariser might be worth a look for sunny days and buildings with lots of glass.

I second getting a hood for protection - my lens hoods have taken a fair few knocks that would have otherwise been the lens.

Polarising filter is very handy

An ND filter it good for long tripod exposures in the day time.

UV is a waste of money
