I was told the other day about an app that is available for the iPad for flight details, as I remember it you could look up aircraft in an area which would give aircraft type and destination and again if I remember correctly you could point at the plane and it would be identified, sorry if this description is vague I was at the bottom end of several large chardonnay's!

yes I have this for the iPhone and it's excellent. You can't point at a plane for identification, but you can get a map up showing all the planes in the air and when you click on one it gives that plane's details (aircraft type, destination, altitude, speed etc). I've been using it for years and it's always been really good and accurate too.

PlaneFinder AR is the augmented reality version, which overlays flight info over the live camera view. Highly recommended.

Hours of fun.
Worth following them on twitter too if you are a user, they will post about unusual stuff (like the Delta flight this week)

thanks everyone for your advise, I went for flightradar24 and is excellent, I did spot one military aircraft, a tanker going from England down to Cyprus. I would have thought military operation would not be shown for obvious reasons?
thanks
