Why is it that when you see still photographs of large numbers of men from 40 or 50 years ago, (or longer still) very few men were bald. I am thinking of picutres of soldiers from WW 2 or similar large gatherings of men.

Today if you view, say, a football crowd or similar lots are bald or nearly so. When I was a young 'un only old men were bald.

Is it diet, something in the water or evolution.

Could it perhaps be that the average age of the groups you're looking at is a bit younger than you'd expect the same sample to be today?

Average age of WW2 soldiers = guessing around 21?

WWII was little longer ago than 40-50 years though.
Cripes! I'm over 50 and was taught about the war in history classes.
