Potential Vanos on an E36 M3?

Hi, going to look at a E36 M3 cab tomorrow with "potential vanos" issues. Now its not been properly diagnosed, just a mechanic looking over it briefly. Its priced accordingly (ie cheap) but im unsure of what to look for and if there is anything similar to the Vanos that it could be.

If it does turn out to be vanos how much im I looking (roughly) at to get it fixed ?
