Hi,

Does the Mk1 Ford Focus 1.8 petrol have timing pulley markers? Is the crank timing belt pulley fitted with a woodruff key or is it free wheeling example like on the 1.6 Focus?

Thanks,

There's a mark on the bottom pulley for aligning the new belt, but no timing marks for cams etc - there's a locking kit that you need for the cams and bottom end, as the cam pulleys are free-floating for tensioning. The cam tool is a simple bar that fits into grooves at the flywheel end of the camshafts, the pin bolts into the block to hold the bottom end - the specs for both are in the Haynes, but I picked a set up on eBay for about £20 (with an extra pin for other engines as well).

ETA: £12 on eBay, looks identical to mine.

Some Zetecs do have a key.
You set the crank to TDC and slip the tool (steel strip) in the slots in the back of the cams.
Once the belt is fitted undo the bolts in the end of each cam pulley and set the belt tension. Tighten the cam bolts.

Only going on my experience Steve - did the belt on my Mrs' Mk.1 Focus Zetec, no mention of other locking tools in the Haynes.

Double check which engine you have?? as said some do,some don`t??
All the Zetecs I have done have been key less so as soon as you slacken the big bolt for crank aux` pulley the cam belt moves out of timing!! on these the correct locking pin for the crank together with the locking plate for the camshafts are essential to get it set correctly.

Tip?,if you have got the crank locking pin type,do not use the pin to hold the crank when slackening/tightening the crank bolt.It will bend or snap off!!
