Hi Guys,
Im new here.
Im just about to buy an "S" Reg TVR Cerbera with 44,000 miles on the clock.

Obviously im extremely excited but Im trying to remain calm and be rational about what to look out for and not to let my heart rule my mind !

Could anyone tell me if the rumours are true about tvr with Reliability please ?
The dealers seem pretty honest and are basically saying that as long as its serviced within its schedule i will be ok ?
the car is a 4.2 (not speed six engine so im told)
priced at £21,000 with 12 month warranty limited to £2,000 a claim .
is there anything i need to look out for on the cerbera ?
and what financial costs for the 1st year ownership am i in for ?
Also can i use the cerbera as my day to day car in the dry and wet weather here on the south coast ?

thanks for any help on this as i need to find as much "honest" info to convince me to buy the car as my hearts set on it !
thanks for any help on this subject.
Pete

You should have done some homework before you jumped into ownership of one of these beasts,i was going to get a cerbera myself until i realised that maybe i wouldn`t be able to afford to keep it on the road, the norm is about 3k a year without to many problems.
If your worried about the expense now i would consider getting a chim or griff as i did which won`t empty your wallet as quick.

Hi Disco.
I havent bought it yet !
im making a decision between a 348, 328 or the cerbera.
but i must say the cerbera is stunning !

what is the £3,000 costs over the year split between ?
is that general servicing ? or does specific items need replacing ?

I have a budget of £3,000 for the upkeep in the 1st year for reference.

I think this is servicing and things that go wrong in general ,if you do a search you will see some of the nightmares people have had but then again you could get a good un ,they ain`t all bad.
As for using it as a everyday car,why not ,the general concensus is that the more they are used the better.
I must agree with you that they are an awesome looking car and it would have been my choice with my heart but not my head.

thats the thing ! its the decision between my head and heart !
im just worried about buying the cerbera then having massive bills.!

i was originally going to buy a 911 convertible but there wasnt enough about that were good examples.
then i read the articles on the cerbera !

i have the cash reserve to look after the car but dont want to end up getting a car where it spends more time off the road than on it !

i can see me buying it friday though !

Morning all

Im a new owner (4months or so)

fantastic car ... my heart always wins over my head anyway ...

If buying from specialist with good service history and warranty you should be OK

Ive used mine in the wet - no problems - respect the car and its fine - You dont always have to use all the power!

They can be expensive to run and parts are the main issue ... but this should get better I would hope (says he whos cars off the road waiting for a new clutch!)

I got mine Private for loads less money (at the time) which meant I then had a good service and overhaul at Offords and a built in reserve for things to go wrong.

Hope this helps ... DAS

In all fairness, the alternatives you are looking at (old ferraris) aren't going to be run on a shoe string either.

Buy the Cerb, wait till your 3k runs out & sell it.

At least you can say you've had one

Good luck

You can use one daily, I've done it for the past year. 12,000 miles in all weathers in a 4.2 Cerb has cost me close to £6k in total (not including petrol or insurance).

Bearing in mind I paid less for mine knowing that it probably needed a couple of grand spending on it to get it up to scratch (and it did), you "should" be ok with your budget.

If it is your only car, then i'd recommend getting something to go along with it, as there will be times when the Cerb will be off the road and parts supply can be annoying.
The key thing in being able to live with a Cerb as a daily car, is to be able to do work on it yourself or be close enough to one of the good independents that get mentioned on here all the time, preferably both...

Did exactly the same thing nearly 2 years ago. No regrets what so ever and it has cost me the sum total of one service this year

Anyway, 348's are slow, left one for dead early on in the summer.

Geez, 21k is an awful lot of money for a 98 car with 44000 on. A quick look on autotrader has them almost all in their teens, and with lower mileage.

There is one up at 18995, 21000 miles, 98 S, and from a dealer. I am not saying don't buy the one you are going to see, but just don't get screwed, either.

I ran my 4.5 every day, and it was well worth it. God knows what it cost a year to run, but it wasn't pretty!

I think that looks pricey too. Sold my brother's 98R Cerb with 46K on clock for just over £18K earlier this year, and my 99S 4.5 only cost £21.5K in March 2003, with 23K miles on it!

And the £3K a year bit is a good average, but it won't happen consistently. In 2003, I spent well over £5K on maintenance (clutch, gearbox, cats, Nitrons, tyres, servicing, etc etc), whereas this year its cost the grand total of £80 for a new battery!

Might be worth shopping around a bit before you buy...on here for more info, and maybe consider speaking to James Agger or Rob Ingleby (good reports although not used them myself)

Cheers
Sean

hi guys ,
thanks so much for all the info.
the car im looking at does seem "unique" the colour is silver and on topmarques there seems to not be many of this type with matching interior.
plus the car comes with 12 months warranty and the suspension has been uprated, new clutch, major service and new gearbox so im thinking thats worth paying more money for the new parts and service or am i seeing this through "rose" coloured glasses !?
there are many cerbs around but i have not seen any like the condition of this one !

p.s whats the site name of these other dealers that are mentioned inthe above posts ?
thanks guys

Who are you getting it from ?

Since you're in Sussex, if it's Fernhurst then it will be a good car, and will be sorted. Obviously things can go pop, but this is a risk on any car.

I'd say 3k a year is realistic - it can go over this, but a car from a good dealer (Fernies is one) should be OK.

I run mine every day, it's been OK, although today I have a problem (probably ECU) that is causing me to be without Wipers and indicators. I'm sure everyone else will be familiar with this kind of thing ....

I agree with other posts, that sounds very pricey! Buy one privately and get Rob Ingleby to inspect it (£600) first - see findasportscar.com in Sprint. You could buy warranty cover for about £500 to cover the claim value they're offering you. I have a 4.5 T reg Cerb, now done 62k and I agree £3k per year should see you ok. Cerberas may start holding their price now that they have been discontinued too. I reckon £18,500 for that car is the going rate (as long as it's not the one in Aston Villa's colours), especial now that winter is here.

There are plenty out there, shop around!

I personally would say, dont waste your money on a Cerbera just yet - wait till next year april time - and pick one up then - cold season here, icy roads wet cold etc etc... buy it in April - and hopefully you'll enjoy it well and get through summer without any niggles - buy one now and all hell could break loose - buy one at april time - and it would have already been repaired in respects to winter season issues...

it dont matter who checks the car out - there isnt much to check - unless there is a full strip down of components and starter motor etc etc... which I doubt you would want to pay for anyway... IMO...
