Hi all

My battery is flat as a pancake today. 2nd time in the past few months. My car used to work after 3/4 weeks of non use. Lately it's become 2-3 weeks.

Is my battery knackered? Hooked up to my CTek but it doesn't seem to give me a readout of battery life. So doesn't seem to be charging. Very confusing!

How do I get into the car with a dead battery? Fob won't open doors as its so dead.

Why won't it charge?
How do I get in?
Do I need a new battery?

Thanks all

It could be the battery is knackered or the alternator is on its way out.

I always have mine on a trickle charger as ive been caught out with a flat battery.

There is a way to get into the car, but for obvious security reasons I cant say. Register your car on noble parts and you can get access to a manual that tells you how.

Thanks Steve.

Bit confused as it has spent the past week and a half on the trickle charger but it didn't seem to register anything on the battery lights on the cTek when I plugged it in. Same again today. Reckon the charger is dead? It's only a year old but I did accidentally pull the wires out of the connector bit. But tore it open and recrimped the wires so its good as new.

If the battery was totally knackered would that stop it charging?

Don't get why I couldn't get the battery lights to register on the cTek.

When my battery totally died, i had it plugged in to the trickle charger and it did nothing, a new battery was the only option.

I would try the trickle charger on another vehicle just to make sure the charger is working if it was previously damaged?

FYI, your C-Tek is more a conditioner than a charger - it has software logic that follows and monitors battery conditioning phases, and its VERY low amperage as opposed to a battery charger/booster. C-Tek takes around 24hours connected to a flat battery before it'll crank (maybe less if you're lucky). A battery charger/booster can take as little as one hour from flat.

Remember though once a battery goes flat is is usually terminal. Boosting a flat battery may get you going but ultimately it'll be fooked and need replacing - it will deffo let you down later.

I have my C-Tek permanently connected - battery is original and 9.5 years old! Sweet as a nut.

Good luck...

Think you are right. I would like to get enough charge to get it going and take it to have battery changed but at the moment it doesn't look promising.

Third time the battery has gone flat, second in as many months so think it is terminal. Just pray it has enough left to take on some charge. Can't even open the car currently!!

You can get to the battery without opening it. Jump start it, take it for a run and see if the conditioner will keep it topped up.

Suggestions...
- connect ctek for as long as you can 1-3 days. Should get you going
- call aa/rac!
- invest in a portable power pack. I got one recently as fed up trying to park cars nor to nose to connect the batteries. Plus I use the air compressor all the time.

Well, good thinking and thanks for the suggestions. CTek has been on for 4 hours but still can't even open the car!

Will borrow my brothers power pack at this rate to get it started. But assuming I need a new battery now!?

Do you have the 'supply' feature on your ctek? If so, hook that up and open the doors, then decide your next move.

Only have 'mode' button on the cTek. Now sure about supply option. The instructions are on the driver's seat!!

Supply mode sounds like a solution though.....anyone know how to make that happen?

You shouldn't let lead acid batteries go completely flat, they don't recover well. I had the same issue as you, both with trickle charger and a conditioner, mine went completely flat three times and needed replacement (luckily under warranty), I always disconnect now if I'm leaving the car unused for any time.

I've had flat battery problems - even with a new one. My Freelander drains everything when its not used for couple of weeks, even though I bought a new battery from the AA. (Who denied that it had a 3 year Warranty, by the way!).

A Maplins solar panel didn't cure the problem so (sometimes) I keep it connected to a trickle charger. Sometimes I forget and then it won't accept any charge, even in 48 hours. One thing that has worked is jump leads from another car when that engine is running. Maybe the battery is a bit "sulphated" and many amps delivered that way give it a kick in the pants. I did that to mine when it first went flat almost 2 years ago and, anly now, is it playing up again. Mind you, I did forget to put it on charge......

If you want a new battery, the guy who used to rent my space left like 3 or 4 brand new race batteries (in boxes). I have no idea on the condition and i'll have to check the size (visually they look like the right size) but they all look unused, might be worth a punt. I've asked for them to be taken away because I don't have any room for them at mine and I need the extra space to work on the car. I'll head to the garage tonight if you would like me to put some to the side for you? They are in Sheph Bush.

Don't know if my experience will help anyone else but, after disconnecting the battery from the car electrics, the trickle charger gave it new life. Obviously there is something in the car that takes the charger output preferentially.

I'll be installing an isolation switch but would like to keep the clock running. Can't find any mention of it in any wiring diagram (in Haynes) so will probably have to run new wiring to it, bypassing the rest of the system. Anyone already done this?

I remain disenchanted with the AA's denial of a 3 year warranty, despite the paperwork clearly showng it. Fortunately the battery lives after all!
