Had my cam change and stuff done a while back now, she is running great but including the initial set up she has been back twice for the pushrods to be adjusted and pre loads set.

Anyone else had this issue? I'm thinking of returning to solid and using shims instead. Not ideal, but can't be doing with the tapping and going to and from the garage, grrrr!

Never known this to be an issue frankly, for the preload settings to be running so far out you have cam train noise sounds more sinister unless the lock nuts are slackening off scratchchin where did you purchase/get them from ?

I don't know if it is the preload that is out or just the pushrods slackening and causing the noise. I got them from Real Steel along with all the other gear I had fitted at the same time.

There is no noise as I pull away from the garage, by the time I've done my 30 min journey home I 'think' I hear something, this gets steadily worse every time I drive her. By the time I got home today it was back to the level where I took her in to get done last time.

Agree with Simon. If they are needing adjusting after being properly set up something is wrong. Either the locking nuts are loosening which is unlikely or its something else.

I've fitted Real Steel adjustable rods to my motor so will be following this thread closely!

As an aside if you suspect the locknuts are loosening, simply scratch an alignment mark on each set of nuts.

Also - IIRC - preload should be set with the lifters EMPTY of oil so if for some reason they were initially set with the lifters full then they could be bleeding down slightly during operation causing the problem.

If this is correct operation for a lifter then that might explain it. If not then hopefully Rob will be along shortly to advise!

Preload is set by the length of the rod effectively - so you either shim (which is a total compromise) or use adjustable rods. Preload isn't set by adjusting the lifters themselves if that's what you're getting at.

Ta, thumbup Thinking back to a rattling problem with a Griff' I had, adjustable rods should've been used. I just couldn't get preload correct with shims alone. Reading OP he says he's returning to solids and shims? Thought solids went with adjustable rods and shims with hydraulic? I can understand hydraulic and adjustable but not solids and shims confused

I've Real Steel rods, nowt wrong with them, mine runs as silent as it should.

Good point with the lifters being full of oil.

If they aren't drained you can't set the pre load accurately.

I had this with a few lifters when I reset mine and had to dissemble them and reset.

Biggest problem is likely to be attempting to use metric spanners on imperial nuts, based on the number of rounded nuts I've seen...

Situations like this are the worst part of TVR ownership for me frown All my fault too.

I have next to zero spennering ability and rely on my local guy. Don't get me wrong, Colin is a legend and his work is second to none. I just wish I had the knowledge and skills to do it myself.

Is it possible to have a roller cam ? Is that the ultimate setup. Does it work on push rods ..At least it follows the whole profile of the cam .

Its just a shame no one does roller followers and rockers for that matter, for our car at a more reasonable price than the Wedge shop. With the popularity of the RV8 over the years you would have thought they`d have been available.

Will the Roller followers lengthen the life of the cam ? It could be worth the money .. are they hydraulic like the standard lifters .Does it have to be a special cam .
