Naming and Shaming - What about Naming and Praising
Discussion
PH has very clear rules on naming and shaming, there's a sticky and everything.
However, similar potentially unfounded statements of praise and recommendation appear to be fair game.
Given that frequently specifics and facts aren't offered up, nor validated, and often there could be underlying vested interests on behalf of any posters (potential that this is traders bigging each other up) is something going to be put in place to check/reduce/stop this in the same way Naming and Shaming stops the opposite?
The N&S policy appears to protect the website, rather than the punter. The above potentially exposes people to greater risk.
Just a thought.

I think so. One of the most valuable parts of the forum can be the referrals you can get from other members when you are looking for a product or service. It's then up to you to decide how reliable the people posting the referral are. This can generally be done by checking their posting history, or by numerous other members chipping in to endorse that view.
The mods look very closely at apparently random effusive praise to make sure that it isn't advertising in disguise, but it can be hard to spot.
As said though, the reality is that we aren't likely to get sued for false praise, but might well do for false criticism. Since we've no way of verifying the latter, we've always taken the view that it must go.
Hard I know, but there's no easy alternative and I often think that silence speaks volumes, whereas if one person has had good service from a company they aren't usually alone.

Well I think Haymarket are wonderful for letting us do this. Autocar can't be beaten and I feel so blessed Pistonheads is, due to Haymarket being excellent, in the same stable as it, along with other fantastic Haymarket publications Druck&Medien and Horticultural Week. We're frankly, thanks to Haymarket, spoiled by it all. The only thing I feel left out of, probably not really Haymarket's fault, coz they are ACE, is that we don't get Renal & Urology News or Oncology Nurse Advisor, as Haymarket in their excellence could really treat us with those this side of the pond.
