Where to stay - Highlands, West Coast

Thinking of driving to Glencoe and then up to Inverness in the next couple of weeks (but open to suggestions). Have not done it for years and want to show Mrs Garyhun some of the most scenic parts as she's never been before.

Where would you go and where would you stay if I was going to be up there for 3-4 days?

Bit of a detour to Inverness but for roads head to the Applecross inn or Skye for the Three Chinmeys.

Kinloch Lodge on Skye is worth a visit. I also have a soft spot for Glenfinnan House, particularly the bar. Thursday nights are ceilidh night, with an extremely talented house band. Avoid Fort William.

Just to add (as mentioned above)... We also stay at both Kinloch Lodge and Inverlodge every year. Both great hotels. The scenery around Lochinver is stunning, and the food at Kinloch is the only Michelin star on Skye.

The Applecross Inn is also supposed to be great (haven't stayed there myself).

If heading north from Fort William I'd take A87 towards the Kyle of Lochalsh then head up toward Loch Carron. The loop from Loch Carron to Achnasheen and back down via Torridon/Shieldaig is superb.

Once you get north of Fort William most of the roads are fantastic (likewise the scenary).

Three Chimneys on Skye also has a Michelin Star,excellent food.
Stayed at a lovely cottage No.10 about 10 mins. away.
The owner of the cottage also provides a lift down to the restaurant.
We stayed a week but they do let out for single nights.

if you're planning on going up to Sutherland may I suggest the Kylesku Hotel for a night. As mentioned The Torridon and Kinloch Lodge on Syke get my vote too.

I think it may have had one previously, but not at the moment. It does have an excellent reputation, though.

I've never been. I planned to stay there a few years ago and got a shock when I looked at their prices. They were an awful lot dearer than Kinloch Lodge, where I ended up booking. I loved Kinloch and have been back several times since, so haven't at looked at The Three Chimneys again. They seem to be doing well though, so obviously they know better than me.

If you're intending to visit the 3 Chimneys you'll need to book, at least for dinner.

Another vote for Skye, but I'd suggest this place http://www.eileaniarmain.co.uk/. We've been here a couple of times and the setting, the staff and the food in the AA Rossette'd restaurant are all superb. So much so that we decided to get married there.

my personal vote for torridon Inn... amazing scenery and just brilliant hospitality with generally quiet roads.

All good suggestions, but if you want something closer to Glencoe as mentioned in the OP, try Ardanaiseig on Loch Awe - stunning location, the food is outstanding, and has really cool quirky bedrooms.

Thank you for all your suggestions.

It looks like we may now only have 4 days (which includes driving from, and back to, Dorset) so might have to delay this until next year when we'll have a full week.

I've bookmarked all the hotels mentioned - there some absolute gems in that list.

If we were to do this at another time, when would you say was the best time of year to come up? We'd want to do some walking, a boat trip to see the wonderful sea life and maybe some shooting. Other than that, relaxing and eating too much.
