I think you may find the 997 feels a tad dated compared to the 981.

I think you may find the 997 feels a tad dated compared to the 981.
Having owned numerous 911s I would say get the cayman unless you REALLY want a 911. I had the option of a 991s or a CaymanS, after driving both I prefered the cayman. I also couldn't justify the extra 30k.

I would seriously consider a well specced 2.7 Cayman instead of a Cayman S. The engine seems more eager and you can drive the nuts off it without doing crazy speeds. Sports exhaust, PASM and Sports Plus (and leather dash) would make it great fun (and feel worth the money spent).
I also prefer the look of the non-S from the front as the spoiler below the number plate is black with the two sides in body colour - very Ferrari on a non-black or grey car.

I have a 997.2 S and had a month's use of both a new cayman and cayman s, both PDK.
Brilliant cars BUT I've always wanted a 911 and was glad to get back in mine, it felt more distinctive.
The cayman although an awesome car didn't feel any more special from inside than any other premium German car despite being far better equipped (bluetooth music, HDD, cool display in the binnacle were all awesome) and appointed than mine; great looking cars too. Perfect size.
Great handling, the 2.7 is a great engine but neither it nor the S gave me the thrill the 997 S does, the whole handling, performance package (for me) delivers something over and above the amazingly competent cayman.
Neither had paddles though and I think that would have made a difference (mine's a manual).
Cayman seems to get a lot more attention too. Get an extended drive in both.. OPC seemed very keen to get people in the cayman (got my mate a week's use).
This mate will be getting a cayman S, he has no interest in the 911 and doesn't like how mine drives, the cayman to him is more benign and approachable.

Funnily enough i was just about to start a thread and this fits perfectly.
Im in Afghan at moment and my missus took my 996 C4S to Bournemouth OPC for a major. I arranged before i came out for her to have a Boxster courtesy and she emailed me today with pics of a nice black Boxster S outside our house. Its PDK (our 996 is Tip) and she loves it. Now we both agreed not to buy a convertible as we dont really go for them so it would be a 997 or new Cayman as a upgrade as i have the same budget as OP.
The Cayman is the in car to have at the moment but didnt work my way up to a 911 and went straight in. Im worried that although a new Cayman would run rings round a 996 C4S Tip (i love it though), would i feel i have "moved down" a level from a 911?

Even though I prefer my 911, it's the driving I prefer, the new cayman in all other respects is at least as good, in no way a 'move down'. In a Spyder now, and although it has its annoyances, I certainly don't feel I've taken a step down.
Had the 981 Cayman been out at the time, I'd most probably be in one instead of the Spyder.
Just because the 911 is Porsche's iconic car doesn't mean the others are inferior.
But only you can know how you'd feel.
Had a 991S for the weekend and found it too heavy and just too fast.
Had a 981 Caymen 2.7 with manual for a couple of days and loved it, you can really drive it like my old school 911 with ending up at mental speeds, it does that too. You can really push it up to the red line on the twisties and throw the thing around.
Miles better than the 991 and I was sooo tempted, but then I got back in mine and although its close it's just not the same. There is a lot to be said for less power and more feed back.
