911 Buying advice / opinions?
Discussion
Guys, looking to gauge opinion, thoughts please on the following points.
If I was to buy a car that was 30 years old it wouldn't matter to me if it had done 50k or 150k miles. Not interested, I would, and do buy on condition, service history etc.. mileage becomes irrelevant.
If an early 911 had been modified to a high standard, become personalised through tasteful alterations (wheels, spoilers etc)would it really be less desirable and less valuable than a clean unmodified original?
Thinking of buying in the near future, personally wouldn't be put off by either of the above?
What do you think? Cheers

Depends how old. If a Pre-impact bumper model, original spec would command the highest price IMHO.CobraPaul said:

Stock and original is best in my opinion. Well, factory or well proven 3rd party engine upgrades are ok. I'm thinking along the lines of chain tensioners, perhaps, that sort of thing. If I was to buy a car that was 30 years old it wouldn't matter to me if it had done 50k or 150k miles. 30 years old and 50K or 150K miles...?
Really it makes little difference.
What matters is condition.
And price.
Or price and condition.
A well taken care of with maybe some not too far distant engine work (quality top end job maybe or a new clutch, etc) beats a beat up thrashed wobbly smoking 50K mile car any day of the week and twice on Sundays.
'course a nice well taken care of 50K mile car beats (all other things equal) a nice well taken care of 150K mile car provided of course among other things the 50K mile example isn't priced up in the stratosphere.
You have to keep in mind too the 50K mile example will lose value quicker as you drive it, vs. the 150K mile example.
Buying a 911 is not a easy task to not let your heart rule your head.
I looked at 12 of the model, I wanted it turned into a long search.
Even cars with low miles condition was poor in most of them.
Miles do come into play when buying as certain bill will come up e.g. TOP END, SHOCKS etc.
I looked at five speeds and four speeds bought a 87 on condition bills service history etc.
So many people buy them, and spend no money on there upkeep.
Also these days most people want a stock car.
Buy the best you can for the money you have, and have some spare for a big bill or two.
If you buy the right one and look after it, you should not lose come selling time.
Goodluck

Depends on the mods. I have '72 911 and a 964 (currently up for sale), both are modified. The '72 car is on carbs not injection, has a wevo kit (the 915 box is not easy) and non-standard exhaust. All the panel are steel, no spoilers - gulf blue and looks and sounds lovely. The stock '72 brakes on my car were terrible so I've put sc brakes on it. Maybe not as pure as was but way better to drive and much easier to live with. The lovely as left the factory cars of this age are really rare and certainly mine with the mods on is way better to drive. I also did not want LHD so that narrows the market if originality is what you're after. My advice would be look hard, be fussy, look to see that the car has been well looked after - many haven't. Condition over miles any day. Personally I like to buy privately, many dealer just inflate the price and don't prep the cars that well - also allows you to meet the owner of the car.
