I have a 2004 e46 m3. I jave heard that you can get the track mode from the csl programmed into the dsc. Is this true and is it something that a bmw dealership would be able to do for me. If not can anyone recommend somewhere near oxford that can do it.

Never heard of such a thing.

You can buy a CSL style air box for these, get some sticky tyres on and turn off the DSC and you have 95% of the CSL.

biggrin

I admit I'm not a CSL afficiando but I've always thought the noise and extra (percieved) performance came from stickier tyres and that wonderful airbox that made it sound like a race car. Does the CSL really have THAT much of an edge over a cooking E46 M3?

You're looking for Mtrac mode, it's a halfway house between normal traction control and off. Anyone who's got the OBDC reader and software can enable it, it's not hard.

Doesn't bring much though, the traction control still cuts in too early. Just turn it off wink

i went back to back around knockhill in the not too distant past, blat in my E46 M3 then passenger run in the CSL. CSL is like everything in my car turned up 110%, feels much more alive. I now have sticky tyres, new clutch, new diff, new brakes, and brave enough to drive the track without the DSC now so will report back but i fully expect it will still be win without a doubt! Weight weight weight...

Although to the point the CSL track mode vs M3 DSC, the CSL track mode was miles better would allow the exit speed power to be delivered whereas mine was trimming speed enormously. If it can be programmed in, I would like to hear back on what you uncover

Yup,

You can get the software and cable from Mtechnik or somin. I have it, but not programmed it. I just turn it off to be honest.

Basically there is an option when you go into a few menus. Then copy and paste info into it. Its not as simple as an on/off.

Its reasonably simple.

Yup, had it activated on mine. It certainly helps when pulling quickly out of junctions or when you do a 180 turn where the standard traction control gets to aggressive and you find yourself stranded with no power, in Mtrack mode it tends to alleviate those niggles.

However, if you want to get the car a bit more "loose" then as said, turn it off all together.

M-Track mode can be retrofitted programmed into the later E46 M3s so is like the M-Track mode in M3 CSL and M3 CS :-)

Although as I understand it does behave slightly different on normal M3's as the CS and CSL has a quicker steering rack so the same software applied to the standard M3 means if you jumped between the two cars, both in MTrack mode, the levels of intervention do vary slightly.

Ive got the cable/software and activated it in mine. It is an improvement, but as mentioned above, it still kicks in a bit early and best to just turn it off.
If you have SMG then the gearbox software can also be updated to the CSL software which is also an improvement.

Is there a button on the steering wheel for the Mtrack mode on a standard E46M3?

Ive activated mtrack on mine. Its not hard to do with an OBD reader lead and a laptop. Its a nice addition.

Theres no mtrack button on the standard E46 M3. The standard DSC button is used to turn it on and off. Press it to turn from DSC on to m-track and back again. You have to hold it down for 5 secs to rurn DSC off all together.

Its a nice difference and is how the stock M3 traction control should have been IMHO. As above though, its just as easy to turn it off all together really.

Depending on which steering rack you have, (the stock E46 M3 rack or the quicker CSL rack), you can set the DSC module so mtrack still react properly.
