Hi everyone,

I'm trying to fill the coolant on my early 93 chimera (none serpentine gearbox model) but I'm struggling to do so. I'm far from a mechanic and the diagrams I've seen seem to be the slightly later model and I'm not sure if the filler is in the same position? Nor am I sure of the procedure and if the system needs bleeding??

Any help and direction would be much appreciated.

Undo the Blue Cap and fill to half way up. Before replacing the cap, go to radiator, off-side and loosen the brass screw & hopefully air will be released and shortly later, water/antifreeze will appear - tighten the brass screw. check level in swirl pot and if still half-way-ish, replace cap.

Level in the swirl pot is a car-specific thing, some like it three quarters others quite low??

You have a "Pre-Serp" engine bye-the-bye 8-))

Have the heater on as well to ensure there are no air locks in that part of teh system.

The bleed valve in the rad is low compared with parts of the system, including the heater!

Find a way of lifting the front up and you will find that your heater works a lot better!

Are you topping up the coolant or filling it up from empty ?
if you are just topping it up as has been said it is the tank to the side of the radiator, this level can be different from car to car, mine always looks low but if I try to top it up it spits the added coolant out,
having said that I always check the level in the swirl pot (the alloy pot at the front of the engine) I always try to keep the swirl pot full and when filling it up after draining put it on ramps to give the air in the system the best chance to get out. mine is a serp engine unsure if yours is the same set up.

Please read the post...........He has a '93 "pre-serp", there is only one swirl pot unlike later models which have what you describe as a second tank. ;-/

I did state that my set up might be different, as for the second tank I have always thought it was an expansion tank, out of interest how do the pre serp engines deal with the expansion of the coolant,
do you leave a space in the swirl pot?
