Hi all – I’m hoping someone here can help me.

In the last year (but mainly last few months) we’ve had some issues with starting our K11 Nissan Micra.

It appears not to like damp, rainy or cold conditions – or cold starting in these conditions. Every time this happens the engine will turn over, but not fire.

We’ve managed to bump start it on several occasions, on others when a bump didn’t work the RAC resorted to removing the spark plugs (they were perfectly functional with life left in them), drying them with a heat gun and putting back in, and hey presto it starts first time. We’ve had to do this (albeit drying the plugs with a paper towel) and again it starts first time.

When inspecting the spark plugs also there is a strong smell of fuel. We’ve been told this could have been from engine flooding. However I don’t understand how this can be, the car has always been driven and bought up to temperature before turning it off (ie we don’t start it just to move it over a few meters, it’s given a proper run)

More recently having bump started the car the revs drop dramatically when you press the accelerator (as if to pull away) to the point where the engine could cut out – thankfully this hasn’t happened.

When the car is started everything is fine – drives normally, starts normally, engine feels strong as it’s ever been, very strange indeed.

I’m writing this because once again this morning it failed to start (It rained overnight and didn’t fancy working) – at about 1pm it reluctantly coughed into life and there was a slightly alarming aroma of petrol surrounding the car.

If it of any help it’s a 1999 998cc model with 89,500 miles on the clock, and the only MOT advisory (from January this year) was regarding a small piece of corrosion on the exhaust (I think).

Any help would be appreciated - with winter on the way I'm hoping that there's a reason or solution to this problem

Many thanks

Phil

Some earlier K11's did have an over fuelling issue. This was corrected with a short wiring loom that contained a resistor. I think it went between the throttle body wiring and throttle body.
It used to be available as a 'campaign' part from Nissan. I don't know if this is still the case.

You could try MSC - http://www.micra.org.uk/categories/k11-1992-2003.6...

Hope this of some help.

Thank you very much both for your input, I'll take a move detailed look at that link tomorrow. I believe that we have the face lifted K11 (K11c I believe). Fingers crossed for a solution smile
