I think this particular car was cable loomed after a Friday session on the sauce. Hardly any of the wiring colour codes cross reference with the circuit diagram!
The mysterious red relay has Black, Brown with White trace, Brown with Yellow trace and Brown with Green trace. Nothing on the circuit diagram cross refers to this.
I can see me buzzing the lot out.....

Those loom colours are more commonly used for things like ignition light, oil and temperature senders so most peculiar !
i haven't got a "big red relay" and from your photo it looks like it's drivers side not over on the left with ECU, fusebox etc. so my guess is it controls something I haven't got.... central locking, electric mirrors, something like that maybe?
It might be the intermittant wiper relay if you have intermittent wipe function on the wiper stalk?
When I replaced the light / wiper stalks switch on my S2 I couldn't find an exact match (It didn't have the intermittant function originally it was just a single wipe function when it was pressed down). The only stalk I could find was the later type with an intermittant function so I also installed an intermittant wipe relay at the same time. From memory, it was a Ford relay, was big and orange / red and looked like the one in your picture.
Hope this helps and makes some sort of sense.....
