Donington decider for Porsche racers

This weekend will see championship settled

Michelin Porsche Open

The final two races of the season for the Michelin Porsche Open Series should bring two excellent grids to Donington Park over the weekend of 23/24 October. Races 16 and 17 of a busy season will wrap up the calendar.

All year Richard Chamberlain has set a scorching pace in his 935 but at Spa earlier in the month he faced a mighty challenge from Peter Cook (911GT2). Their battle was a highlight of the weekend and Cook is aiming to return to the series this weekend for another attack on the all-conquering 935.

Rupert Lewin's 996GT2R will lead the chase, while a gaggle of 911GT3 Cup cars will pack out class two. Craig Rapp, Henry Firman and Jason Young have set the recent pace and they will be joined by series newcomer Philip Tayson in an Trakshare-backed car.

All sorts of people have won class three, including Gordon Mathew (944 Turbo) and Paul Howells (993RSR), while Alex Eacock and Tim Bevan have enjoyed some cracking battles in class four. It should be a fine end to another excellent season of racing from the Porsche Club GB.

Michelin Porsche Club Championship

The outcome of the Michelin Porsche Club Championship will finally be settled at Donington Park over the weekend of 23/24 October as a double header meeting wraps up the 17-race season.

With the best 13 scores to count, double-points jokers and bonus points for starting the final round of the championship, it could take a calculator to finally decide the overall champion, but things are looking good for Richard Lambert.

Racing his Carrera 3 in class two, Lambert has led the championship since playing his joker in the very first race of the season at Croft back in April. He has since won the class regularly and finished strongly overall in a fantastic season. If he has two more decent scores this weekend, he should have done enough to win the title.

Class one is wide open, however, as just four points split Ian White (3.2 Carrera) and Tamworth charger Peter Morris (968CS). Their year-long battle is set to go all the way to the end of the second race on Sunday and will surely provide a dramatic end to the season. No longer in the championship battle is Chris Egginton after a hefty shunt in qualifying at Spa, but if Egginton is back on the grid at Donington he will be a strong contender.

Rob Williams (Carrera 3) and David Botterill (924 Carrera GT) are the other class two front-runners, but Botterill may be absent due to a clashing fixture at his home circuit of Croft. Meanwhile, Fraser Robertson's 944 is looking set to wrap up class three after a superb campaign, with Chris Stewart's 911E leading the chase.
