The diff on my car has a lot of play in it , what sort of job is it to remove from the car once the rear window has been taken out ? .And can anybody recommend a suitable firm or establishment who can overhaul the diff preferably in the Yorkshire area

OK, it ain't Yorkshire, but Central Axles in B'ham seem to do a good job

You need a set of big bks or an engine crane to take a Salisbury out..
Not sure if an M comes out the side or if the back screen has to come out as per a Tuscan / or Griff.

How much play do you call a lot as they can have a lot of play and be fine? From memory of when I've MOTd these doesn't the diff drop straight out? If so the way I do it with my car, which has a similar chassis setup, is to undo everything necessary bar the 4 main bolts then lower the car onto a milk trolley and then lift the car up with a jack and slide the diff out. It's far easier said than done but it works and I can remove and replace the diff on my own using this method.

Before you start changing the dif have you greased up all your prop shaft grease points and half shaft ujs and bearings as these need doing every service and are often missed and can make a difference most have some play but if these points are missed it can be worse.
I thought i had too much play in the 3000s however once i did all the grease points and took out the half shafts and re greased and back together it made a big difference i will be doing this every 1500 miles or so as its really a quick job to do.

Agreed Frank - they seem to have done a good job on mine (Jag 4HU from an XJ6) but then I haven't put any power through it yet! Still waiting for the body respray to finish :sigh:
