Hi guys,

Potentially interested in running an RS4 Avant as an everyday motor doing towing duties.

At the moment i have a Cayman S, im moving house, starting back at the racing and need to tow my race trailer, generally im looking for a larger car for B&Q runs, and throwing my tool box in the boot.

Previously i had a Nissan Navara as well for these kind of jobs, but i want to try and stick to having one motor thats sporty, presentable but yet practical.

Im going to go and have a drive in my friends RS4 Avant next week and see how i like it, but i need a couple of questions answered 1st.

How hard is it going to be to run? cayman is returning 23/24 average.

Has anyone run one on LPG? is it an option? at 78p a Litre it sounds like there could be a good saving.

Can the car be fitted with a removable tow bar without chopping at the back bumper?

Thanks in advance,

I see a similar average from my RS4 Avant; slightly less if there's not much motorway cruising involved.

The RS4 is not type approved for any towbar fitment. This may cause you problems with insurance (especially if you should have an accident whilst towing) and possibly even at MOT time. You may find that tow bar centres are not willing to fit one for you. However, I believe that it is possible to fit a removable bar such that it protrudes through the (removable) panel on the back bumper.

I know this because my original plan was to tow with my RS4. I ended up buying a Land Rover Defender for towing duties ...... and keeping the RS4 anyway. biggrinhehe

Thanks Jeremy, Well i could fit the tow bar myself, that wouldn't be a problem but someone does manufacture one for these cars?

Looked at a defender 2weeks ago, couldn't live with one day to day, looking for something to do everything.

You won't find a tow bar designated as being for the RS4 (because they are not type approved for fitment). However, I think a standard B7 A4 bar should be capable of being fitted.

It might be worth checking with a friendly local fitting centre and/or on www.rs246.com - I know there is at least one Avant that has a bar fitted.

My local fitting centre were willing to supply and fit a bar "unofficially". wink

Any idea why the RS4 is now Type approved for fitting a tow bar? i would assume that the car should have the same towing capacity of a B7 Avant?

Something to do with cooling I believe.

Insufficient engine cooling under increased load of towing.

I don't believe it is.
When I bought my b8 RS4, the dealer told me it definitely wasn't approved for towing
The new RS6 is though

Check out rs246 forum, I am pretty sure there is a guy on there who has a towbar and it has been cleared by insurance.

I would by a 3.0tdi A4, remap it and it will be quick, will tow happily all day long and do 40+mpg. It's still no RS4 but would be better than adding a tow bar and MPG to one!
I'm sure it will affect resale too if that bothers you. I'm looking at RS4s at the moment and would defiantly not be interested if its LPG and got a tow bar.

After reading it would appear that LPG doesnt work with the FSI system overly well.

As for the tow car, if i thought it would be an issue for resale i would just remove it again!

I understand what you are saying about the TDI, but it just wouldnt look or feel special enough for me, im struggling already to accept that i might buy an estate never mind a Derv one! (28, with no dogs or kids)
