I know a few people have had their dash off recently, but I'm looking to calibrate my temp gauge. Once thing I noticed is that there is a resistor inline, almost like the Landrover sender mod. Is this resistor standard?

I don't think that it is standard, especially looking at the crimps! How far out is the gauge reading to that shown on the rover gauge software?

I have checked both of mine and they seem to read to low before the fans come on but fine when they come on and go off.

Probably about 15-20 degrees out. The car sits around 85-86degs on Rovergauge when driving and the fans come on about 98 degrees when in traffic. The gauge does't resemble that at all.

Have you tried it without the resister in line?

Not yet, but was planning on using the Landrover sensor with the Spiyda Gauge. I may give it a run tomorrow with the dash off.

I use the temp gauge more of an indicator of normal, than anything accurate. I was stuck in a long traffic jam today in my new Chim and probably watched the temp gauge more in that 40 mins than I have in 4 years of the old one!!

I cant believe how much heat the 5ltr gives off compared to the 4ltr unless its created by the cat convertors which are gone on my blue one?

It gets hot quick. The dials are a source on constant paranoia!

Well there's another question. I tried tracing the earths because I wanted to create a few new ones as my gauges increase their values when I turn my headlights on. So, in short, I couldn't find where the earths terminated. There were several black earths all taped together, but everything then disappears through holes in the fibreglass (see below).

Gotta love that loom behind the dash ...

I'm trying to convince a mate to make me a new (dismountable) loom for the new dash I'm doing that doesn't look like a disembowled C3PO so that I can (hopefully) slowly work through the entire car replacing what's in there currently and getting rid of the dross. biggrin

Hi Chris,

this 100R (?) resistor isn't standard.

The gauge grounds terminate on the N/S transmission tunnel chassis bolt wink ........ well should do scratchchin

I cleaned the transmission tunnel earth the other day after I added another earth from the battery to the chassis. I noticed three 25mm earths (one of which was from the battery) and a silver spindly wire. Not sure what this is spindly wire is or where the other two earths come from?

They are the ignition switched & fused +12v supply to the dash ~ only other + in the dash are the battery feed (to clock & radio) and the lighting circuit for the instruments (isolated by the hidden switch). The rest are pretty simply the signal wires for each gauge (except the voltmeter, if fitted, which senses from the power supply).

Thanks for that.

Trust me I would rather diagnose an instrument wiring fault on these cars (spaghetti and all) over anything modern any day scratchchin look up VAG/Volksagen K line for example then get back to me eek you got it easy wink
