Just went and had a good look over an M5. Since buying a new Ducati its felt a little soulless and I always wanted one.

Anyway I drove it and very happy with the deal they've done.

Now can the gearbox be improved by a software update or anything post purchase? I've read a bit about it etc.
Just wanted to know any other tips etc?

Ask them for the latest software update as part of the deal.

It's simply a case of plugging it into a laptop and programming it into the ECU/gearbox.

Do you have any issue with loud cars? If not, get a muffler delete done where the 4 rear silencers are removed and straight pipes put in place.

The noise is amazing and was the best mod i've done to a car ever! Sounds similar to a stock Gallardo but louder IMO,worth every single penny

Gearbox wise, I found S5 using flappy paddles and slight lift off throttle before changing the gear made it better

Hey King Eric, welcome to the V10 fold!

On the gearbox - what the poster above me said. S5 and a slight lift as you change and they are lightning quick and very smooth. In auto mode you can learn when the box is about to shift and also lift off the throttle and you get great changes too.

What year s the car? Probably has the most up to date software installed...as above posts, you will get to learn and appreciate how the SMG operates. Have had mine 2 weeks now and is a pleasure to drive in all different scenarios...i get D2 to run smooth and S5 in using paddles or knob is very smooth!! Enjoy when you get!!

In general how have you found the move, is it like stepping back in time in terms of technology?

I'm currently selling my E90 M3 as I just don't drive it enough to justify keeping it, if I was to trade then a move back to an E60 M5 might be an option, would save a bit of cash.

I had one a while back but didn't stick with it long enough before I traded it in, hated the gearbox but maybe I should have stuck with it.

I have had my V10 a month now and still have this huge love hate thing going on with the box. Sometimes even in the number 1 setting it doesn’t seem to bother me other times i am massively upset with the clunky slow nature.
I agree with the above posts about S5 and lift feels much better.
My main problem I think is that I drive another car and when getting back into the M5 it takes a bit of getting used to.
You do have to give yourself time with the car to fully appreciate what it offers, this i feel, has not been done by a lot of critics and why so many people bemoan the box and sell the car. Give it time use it for more than just commuting, stretch its legs and use the box and engine as it was designed and you will begin to forgive the box and smile each time you drive it.
The noise is sublime, the speed understated, it never feels that quick to me but look in your mirror or at the speedo and it is very quick as well as being able to use it for the commute in a very relaxed comfortable way wins my over every time!

Top lurking Sir!

I'm looking at E39 M5s atm but the market is strengthening, not so with the E60 presenting a little bit of a quandry. My E39 budget with a few spare grand is now an E60 budget with nearly no spare grand, however, sensible motor choices have never been my strong point.
