Broken jaw question...

So I bust my jaw playing football t'other day and am currently in a pure state of boredom (luckily Football is back on1).

I have a few questions about what is actually happening in my mouth and what will be happening. I have 8 screws placed in and around my mouth which I thought were for elastic bands, however they are seemingly doing nothing? Was this just a precaution? As the doctors were all happy with my bite etc.

Do the screws get taken out? Or left in just like the plates?

What makes you say that? Trouble now that I've mashed my face up? Or trouble anyway? My dentist has always kept an eye and said they'll be alright. Either way I'm easy, they can have them if they want them

Unlucky, I had the same thing happen to me a couple of years back, not nice.

Are the screws sticking out of your gums?

I had a broken jaw in 2 places years ago after someone took a dislike to me in a night club! The screws were put in as a precaution but I never needed to use the elastic band thingys. When everything was healing up nicely the hospital removed them again.

Lower right wisdom is impacted - you can see it growing sideways. Not related to your bust jaw though.

Yeah they will remove them after a few weeks. I only wore elastics on one side and the screws on the other side were put in "just in case".

You're awake when they do remove the screws - pretty gruesome!

Trouble anyway I'm guessing. I've got exactly that and apparently it's only a matter of time. Serious excavation required to extract that and very close to an important nerve apparently.

Follow my lead and forget you ever heard/read that.

I've had a sideways growing wisdom tooth for 20 years. No problems apart from when it semi-erupts 1 week in 50 and my gum gets a bit sore.

You've done well! They'll take those screws out soon, but if they're rubbing on the inside of yours lips/cheeks, try putting a bit of Babybell cheese wax over the heads or some cotton wool in between your gums and cheeks just to lift them a bit.
This was mine a few years back in France and the jaw was left supported by the wires that go up towards the eye sockets.



Since then I've had it fixed properly and the 8 screws you have were removed, local anaestetic, pain free and 2 minutes work. You'll see in mine a 6 tooth porcelain bridge and other tooth repairs, plus a wisdom tooth on the lower right which has basically become bone now.

Woah yours looks mega! Thanks for the heads up re: screws, they are slightly in the way but nothing terrible- and will be going next week.

Fingers crossed yours will be gone before they start to rub, but if not they become quite uncomfortable and inescapable. I got to a point where I thought I'd just unscrew them myself with one of those little pozidrive screwdrivers you get in Christmas crackers! My missus hit the roof and gave me a bking! In my mind a few minutes of pain taking them out was gonna be a lot better than weeks of pain leaving them in and rubbing!
