Good evening, good evening.

The beast is playing up again developing two problems in one! I was wondering if anybody could help me out with the wealth of knowledge that is available on here. As you will probably realise- I don't really know my way round the car still!

Firstly the battery keeps draining from full to not enough to start the car when I take the car out for a run or leave the car sitting up. There was a blue wire tapped to the battery negative terminal which has come off fully and I have not yet had a chance to get a new connector to put it back on. Would this have something to do with it? I go to start it even after a quick drive and it just gives me the old 'roll of the tongue' clicking noise instead of turning the engine over.

When it does start, it's like the throttle keeps sticking when pulling up to stop. The engine ticks over at about 1100 rpm for a few seconds before returning to zero.

Also, today the power has seemed to drop away under hard acceleration and it would splutter as if there were a fuel blockage. I'm not yet sure if it's rev related or throttle position related. It's been a very sudden thing that was fine a few hours before. frown

There's always something wrong! Makes me want to sell up every time there's a problem, but I fall straight back in love every time I'm out in it and all is well! rolleyes

Get the multi meater out and check you voltage t the battery (not running)
Then when running you may have the 100a fuse blown

The power dropping away under acceleration and the battery draining are probably related, as said the first thing to do is always check that the battery is actually charging correctly because of the fuses between it and the alternator.

My thoughts exactly and easy to test.

Charge up the battery.

Multimeter out, set to the 20 volts scale.
Engine off, ignition off.
Cover off the back of the alternator.
Stick the red lead on the thick lead's terminal, black to anywhere onthe engine block.
12.6 volts, 100 amp fuse fine. 0 volts, 100 amp fuse is your problem.

It sits between alternator and battery electrically speaking.

If you had 12.6 volts, you have just tested the battery too.

To test the alternator, start the car, leads on the same places, you should have 13.8 to 14.2 volts. If the voltage actually drops instead, your alternator is stuffed.

The 100 amp fuse is strapped to the underside of the chassis in a fuse holder, close to where the driver's side lower front wishbone, rear arm, meets the chassis.

Definitely check out all the info above.

Just wondering about your problem when you say it keeps draining the battery. How long is the car left unused? Do you have a battery conditioner plugged in to keep the battery topped up?

Most people find that without regular use the battery will drain down while it is just sat on the drive. A battery conditioner will keep the battery fully charged without over charging it.

We are talking a matter of 20 minutes here. The battery conditioner saying the battery is FULL. The car starts fine, I take it out for a drive, get back- forget to take it out of gear when getting out to open the gates, stall it and then it doesn't have enough juice to start.

Battery charger says the battery is now LO. And I have to get the neighbours to help push her back over the ridge and into the garage!

Thats going to be the 100 amp fuse, little black plastic box on the under side chassis rail next to the drivers front wheel. Dont pay tvr prices, they can be had on ebay fairly cheap for a handfull of them or halfords sometime stock them with the car audio stuff.

Alex.

I see you are in Surrey, whereabouts?

If you want a hand to check the fuse let me know.

I'm in Purley near Croydon.

I sometimes feel like keeping a car like this in and an area like this is like keeping a bear in captivity!

She's a pre serp and round town she spends a lot of time shunting as if she just wants to be let loose haha!

I can't thank you guys enough for your help! I'll get a whole load of 100As off the net.

I see a dark blue chim on the M25 between junctions 9 and 7 from time to time cruising along at 60 in the inside lane. Is that you?

You need to rub in ointment when you are no longer stuck!, but you are better off using lube to prevent getting stuck in the first place then you don't require any ointment because you never got stuck cos you have used lube. confused
