I want to buy a set of road legal trackday tyres ,I`m aware of the tyres having square shoulders .currently on Falkens 245/40/17 and 225/454/16,no rubbing but both are tight, the square shoulders my cause them to rub .
Do go down a size or chance it ,another problem is there will less rubber on the road which is not a good thing ..

I have had several different tyres on my car (Porsche 964) and have not had any rubbing issues even when changing from 215 fronts to 225 fronts. I am on lowered suspension with limited clearances. I guess what I am suggesting is the difference in overall size will be minimal. I have heard that a '225' tyre from one manufacturer might be wider or narrower than the same tyre width from another manufacturer... Not sure if it's true. Also look to maintain the rolling radius the same if you change tyre sizes. Many online conversion charts... Just google it.
With respect to road holding and road legal track tyres... I drove around Spa in the wet and drove back from Spa in the snow on Yokohama AD08 tyres. Not the ultimate track focused road tyre but not so far off and they were fantastic every inch of the way. You might want to mention your car and setup since I feel sure someone on here will have experience of something very similar.
