What started as a small scab!!!

Turned out to be a lot more!!
Decided to get under the S2 this afternoon to check for any play in the props haft as have a gear stick that likes to buzz but whilst about to remove my exhaust I noticed a tiny scab of rust in the out rigger tube just before the weld where it joins onto the main chassis so if sitting in the passenger seat it would roughly be where your right foot would rest.
Question is do you think I would be able to cut the bad piece out which is about 6" in length then weld in a new piece?
I still have my mig welder from 7 years ago when I restored a 2.8 Capri.
The outside diameter measures 45mm, would anyone on the forum know where I can purchase a small piece of mild steel tube? eBay sellers have it in metre lengths!

Most steel stockholders have a offcut bin, however I'm afraid you would be delaying the inevitable, time to think about lifting the body, you will feel better knowing it's done.

Looking at the pictures again I don't think you have much chance doing a satisfactory job with the body on anyway it's right on a mounting point, nobody likes the smell of melted grp.

Isn't it about £1.5K now to get a partial lift and replacement outriggers? Peace of mind for a good few years for a reasonable price.

I wouldn't want to get a lot of heat into those tubes with a fibreglass tub sitting on it...

Or £50 in steel, a couple hundred quid for a mobile welder and fifty quid in bolts and paint ? One thing leads to another but it really needn't be that expensive and with help on here the lift is not that complicated.

Most of us run these on a budget and since my Divorce I have come very close giving her up as I still owe £££'s to various family members.
That aside I was just hoping I could sort this myself without a body lift.
I have given the rest of the chassis a good going over and from what I can see all seems ok.

2 metres of the correct tube cost me £12, with a bit of plate thrown in free to repair the mounting. I spent about £65 on bolts etc, and about the same again on paint. Took me 5 weeks in odd nights and weekends, but cost me next to nothing. Fully agree, it's not that complicated.

Those of you who have purchased the mild steel tubing can you please give me an idea of sizing?
The existing outside dia looks like 45mm buy what wall thickness would be best?

The correct spec for the tubing is 1.5 inch ERW, 1.6mm wall thickness. I couldn't get ERW, so had to buy 2 metres of the more expensive seamless for my £12. Money no object here!

Right first up don't panic, unfortunately your choices are a bit limited. First things first,do you want to keep the car or are you prepared to sell it at a reduced price? I toyed with the idea of selling but when I was only offered 2k I decided to keep mine and as such decided to lift the body my chassis looked fine, solid and was regularly waxoiled but of course it was a lot worse than I thought. every single s that is on it's original outriggers and been driven will eventually need a chassis repairs. If you are going to keep it you will have to lift the body, I'm doing mine on my drive and every single component has to be saved for, bought second hand, haggled over,begged and borrowed. Don't be in too much rush and go for it, I'm sorry but the repair your talking about is not really feasible, and your outriggers are probably worse than you think. I'm really sorry I'm not trying to be unpleasant, but if the cars a keeper do it once and do it right.

A agree with what you are saying, the outriggers were repaired prior to my purchase 4 years ago so assume the outboard ones were done!
My S2 was origially for sale at £3000 but purchased her for just over £2000 as the paintwork is patchy plus she has done around 140000 miles but on the positive side she had a decent history, recent new roof, stainless V8 style exhaust, tidy interior and since my ownership I have replaced the steering rack last year, new oil sender unit, new bulk head steering bush and replaced the radiator cooling fan which was kindly supplied by an S owner on this forum.

I would love to keep her if possible.
I have a decent garage and still have my mig welder (will need to practice as been a while) but as mentioned on several of my posts I have lower back problems so have to be careful as only earlier this year I ended up in hospital!
I'm in Addlestone Surrey one mile from Junction 11 M25.

Been working hard in the garage most evening this week, all chassis tube now welded up so next job remove exhaust then prop shaft to check joints just in case it's causing my gear stick buzz.
