good cocktails, whisky, real ale... also red meat, maybe BBQ type stuff for food

The two that would fit all criteria are:

Big Easy & Bodeans, I eat at Big Easy regularly as I love it but Bodeans is also brilliant but more expensive for no obvious benefit!

Bodean's as already mentioned.

Great cocktails in the Hawksmoor, but that is steak rather than BBQ. At 7 Dials you can just go to the bar, you don't have to eat there.

Also heard good things about Pitt Cue Co, but not been there myself.

Pitt Cue Co is good for food, but very cramped. IMO it also wouldn't hit the Ale/Cocktail criteria too well.

When I went with my GF, we ended up having to share a table with another couple!

However, there are some good pubs right by it - the Pigs Ear, the Anglesea Arms with beer and decent snacks. The hot scotch egg at the Pigs Ear is delish.

Don't go to Bodeans at Tower Bridge, it's a bit like TGI Fridays.

You'll be right around the corner from Hix Oyster and Chop House - one of my favourite restaurants in London.

for bars, you arent too far from Nightjar and Calloo Callay, both nice places for a drink.

Another vote for Pitt Cue & Co off Carnaby St for BBQ food and they're whisky sower is pretty special too.

But for a proper cocktail bar then try the Experimental Cocktail Club on Gerrard St (Chinatown) you enter through a rather scabby plain looking door and head up the stairs to a speakeasy type bar, probably will need to book to guarantee a table.

If you fancy heading south of the river then Brixton Village is good to potter around in the afternoon and wide choice of options for dinner before heading to Southsider Cocktail Club near Clapham Junction, best I've tried.

I found Bodeans a bit overrated, had to queue outside for well over an hour, when we got in they'd sold out of pulled pork and service was just sloppy. Maybe I caught them on an off day?

No its pretty average, but for years it was pretty much the only option in London worth going to. There's a few more BBQ joints these days though.

Go to Chinatown. Take in the smells, and choose a restaurant based on that.

It sounds like it. I've never had any problems with the Soho branch other than the fact it's in London and I'm in Swansea! Service has been spot on for me and I've never had any major delays.

well, we tend to go to london for a nice weekend maybe once a year, and chinatown had become a bit of a habit! also brick lane... as good as they are, feels like we've done those a bit now.

If barbecue and whisky are the two most important components. BBQ whisky beer is a shoe in. Best beef ribs I've ever had, unbelievably moist and a huge selection of whisky.

What's your usual order? I find Big Easy crazy expensive- their average starter is more expensive than Bodean's Soho Special sandwich!
Last time I was there, Big Easy wanted £7 for "loaded" potato skins, with a further £2 supplement if you wanted bacon on them.
