Do you trust OPC with sales and when servicing your car?
Discussion
I've got an interesting story but thought would pose a couple of questions first:
1- when buying from an opc do you think they would sell a car fully compliant to approved used car policy?
2 - when trusting an opc to service your car do you think they would treat it with care and not rag the arse off it ?
3 - over rev b
ks for warranty renewal, would they ever deem them to be spurious?

I'm very new to Porsche ownership but I've been a lot more impressed with their level of service than I was with BMW main dealers, I guess some will be better than others. I had a very good buying experience from Porsche East London.2 - when trusting an opc to service your car do you think they would treat it with car and not rag the arse off it ?
1 - A lot of these multi-point checks are made up of pretty basic checks but if they haven't been done correctly you have a pretty good basis for claims against them. When buying a used car I ask to see the completed check sheet and keep a copy of it.
2 - You'd hope you can, I'm sure there are horror stories out there though. I think OP's going to give us one!

2 I wouldn't bet on it.
3 Not if it was in their interest not to do so.
I can't comment from a sales point of view but after getting some quotes for servicing in the local area the local OPC came back the same and in some cases vastly cheaper! The car has full Porsche SH so I wanted any excuse to continue the trend.
I have to say I was extremely impressed with the customer service I recieved, the pricing and turnaround was also above and beyond what I expected.
Do I think they ragged my car during the service? no.
I think an old 996T would fall into the not so interesting category when they have 997 GT2RS's popping in. I also checked my rev ranges before and after for peace of mind
I do think this varies alot depending on which branch you go to, I have only ever seen good things said about the OPC in chapelgate

Thoughts on this for a story........
I have been lucky enough to own five Porsches since 2002, a 986, 996c4s, cayenne, 987 and now 997 turbo. All cars bought from OPC network except the 987 which was bought from an Edinburgh independent with excellent stock.
I bought this car from OPC x in August 2011. I had not seen the car but cosmetically car was good from somebody who had a look for me. It was mid priced within the opc network for cars on sale at time but had the colour and spec I wanted.
Car had done just over 27000 miles when I picked up and as part of prep new rear brakes and pads fitted, some paint, service history was good and wheels were refurbished also.
I have always serviced my cars annually as I like to keep the oil changes more frequent and it keeps on top of anything needing doing.
The car had not been driven much in last 12 months prior to purchase as it had service in August 10 at 25.3k miles.
A couple of niggles developed. I had a hot starting issue and the tyre pressure system would go into learning and then say puncture which was quite annoying.
I was going on holiday in October 11 for 10 days and have enjoyed a relationship with OPC Y who have serviced all my cars over last 11 years.
I advised issues on cars and said I'll leave it with you when on holiday and let's do an oil and filter check at my cost, puts another stamp in book. I left the car on 13/10 with opc y. They advised that they would need to road test the car to mimic the tpc failure as it was learning for about 30 miles on each start up then say puncture. They would then swap wheels etc to verify. Also car needed to be hot for starter issue.
Car was serviced at 17/10 at 29250 miles.
Lots of warranty work on this car so OPC y has been well funded for radiators starter motor, spoiler control unit failure, engine mount snap and new rear pu.
I serviced again last year in August 2012 at 39k miles for minor service and had new tyres also.
Cut to now.............
Just back from hols, couple of days off, warranty renewal due so phone opc and say can I bring car in for 111 point check, let's also do the oil car is now on 47000 miles. No problem. OPC y phones me and says, car has passed 111 point check but now we have a slight concern via the fact that there is over revs in every range of the car but they happened a good number of hours ago and to get a warranty you will need a compression and leak down test which is quite a lump of money. We are sure car will be fine as it happened a long while ago.
I immediately started to get concerned and started the detective work
It's not within last 200 hrs. Here is the data today.....
17th 0ct 11 data is ignitions at running hour, time on motor 858h
Range 1 9162 @ 855.300 h
Range 2 996. @ 855.300 h
Range 3 35. @ 855.300 h
Range 4 3. @ 855.300 h
Range 5 2. @ 759 h
Range 6 2. @ 759 h
Today 1462h on motor
Range 1 9667 @ 1425.4h
Range 2 1028 @ 1323.4
Range 3 36 @ 860.80 h
Range 4 4 @ 860.8 h
Range 5 2. @ 759 h
Range 6 2. @ 759 h
1) I contacted opc a to to see if they will give me the val record for warranty issue when I bought the car in august 2011. The service at 26 Aug 10 was a major and there were no rev ranges above 3. I got that data from OPc x interrogating the system. However what I also got was that I BOUGHT THE CAR AT 775 hours and the 5 and 6 was at 759 hours. As I understood opc policy this should not have been retailed with those entries.
With 2 entries the engineer in me said these look spurious
2) Rev range 4 entry
The first occurrence of rr 4 is at 855.3 operating hours with car serviced at 858 op hours. 3 ignitions recorded. This is 3.2 hours prior to service val - my contention they have been road testing the tpc and leaving the car running for hot start problem?
The second occurrence is 1 additional ignition at 860.8 op hours - cumulative 4. This is 2.3 operating hours after service val
4) Subsequent driving - this is my 5th porsche and I am quite careful. You can see 500 more ignitions in RR1 suggesting I have been at the limiter for about 1.5 seconds in total since october 2011. The car has not been abused or tracked. I sold other manual porsches to independent dealers who were happy with the ecu readings (1 911 and 2 boxsters). I offered 996 c4s back to opc y when I bought a cayenne and the car was good for stock. With over 120000 miles in manual porsches I have not buzzed any engines.
5) Driver log - i have asked opc "can you please check the dates car was in opc in october and see who was recorded as driving the car for road testing the tpc etc.?"
The concerning factor was that I was being told to fund a leak down and compression test and with rev range 4 I believe an opc would not stock the car even with warranty.
The time in rev range 4 is 4 ignitions equating to 1.3 revolutions@ 7000 rpm this would equate to about 1 hundredth of a second.
I immediately contacted porsche GB and advised of situation. Shortly thereafter the dp of opc called to say they would fund the leak down test etc. I was still unhappy as he had advised that there had been an investigation, the over rev challenge from from me alleging opc had the car when the revs occurred cannot be supported and they confirmed they put fuel in the car on the Thursday (3 days after servicing).
Having read threads about warranty claim refusals on merger engines I got a bit upset. The tests came back clear and oh despite 111 point check being clear we have failed your car on rear brakes and disks!
After many calls and car with them for 10 days here is what I got
"Thank you for your email and your patience while we have together tried to get to the bottom of this. I have spent some time investigating the issue and have listed below answers to your questions and other relevant facts that we have discussed over the phone.
1. PC Fuel Purchase – X station– Thursday , 11.10am 20.10.11 – 15.22 Litres – £20.08
2. New Tyres are fitted on site with our own equipment
3. No Road Test Logs
4. Mileage is recorded only once – Job Card raised on Friday 14.10.11, mileage recorded – 29,250, First clocking - 9.21am, Monday 17.10.11. VAL timed at 10:00:32, 17.10.11 – Further Tests recorded that day. Final clocking 22.10.11 8.48am.
5. Vehicles shows two RR 5-6 prior to purchase from Selling pc that PCGB have already confirmed are implausible and can be ignored.
Because of the pre purchase “implausible” recordings and the dubiety over 2 x RR4 later readings that also appear “implausible” PC Y with PCGB assistance have carried out a Cylinder Leakage, Compression and Oil Test that has shown no issues and a fresh Porsche Warranty can be issued if required. ” PCGB confirm, as there are single ignitions in two different rev ranges at the same time, these readings should also be regarded as implausible.
This clean bill of health effectively draws a line under the history of the car and future VAL examination should have the VAL at the current hours (1462 Hours) taken into account to obtain recent and relevant history. There should be no effect commercially as the car can now be issued with a Porsche Warranty and future Porsche Warranties can be issued providing the criteria is met"
Thoughts.....................................?????????????????? I now have the car back and negotiated a discount on brakes and have a fresh warranty but despite mouthwash I have a sour taste.

What concerns me is that nobody seems to know why or when these "spurious" readings are added.
......... You could have a car that's recorded say a rev range 3 or 4 hundreds of hours ago and all of a sudden just 1 extra spurious reading could make it seem like all the ignitions have occurred recently. This could well be the difference between selling a car and being turned away ??
In your particular case as Porsche have admitted all the readings in those higher ranges are false, they should be removed by them (IMO).

So the car is fine, compression test done for nowt, warranty renewed, peace of mind, no affect on value, brakes needed doing anyway and discounted... end result sounds ok to me?
In theory yes, but:1. Did the car get ragged when it was not with me?
2. How do you explain a spurious reading?
3. Are they denying warranty claims on back of spurious readings?
4. When I eventually come to sell and somebody gets a rev range reading the car has a story
5. I would not have bought the car with rev ranges 5 and 6 had I not trusted an OPC
I'll be buying a durametric to check revs when I put the car in for work and when it comes out. Anybody buying a porsche from an OPc, caveat emptor and get rev ranges checked

Not so sure about that. You and I know they are errors but unfortunately others will just see them as real over revs irrespective of how many are recorded!ash73 said:

So you'd be happy for your dealer to be taking your car to the rev limiter when "road testing" would you? Because it seems pretty clear to me that this is what happened, cutting through the 'dubiety'.Interesting question, we bought our first Porsche at Xmas time, a new 981 2.7 Boxster PDK.
Sales experience was great, I couldn't fault it and the sales man went the extra mike for customer service.
BUT
Warranty issues developed around 1100 miles, and it was a nightmare experience. The issue was a clunking sound from the engine bay. OPC diagnosed a broken exhaust bracket and said they would need the car for a day. Duly left it, but at end of day was told they had not been able to correctly diagnose and fix the fault and could they keep the car.
Car was eventually returned 11 days later with just under an additional 100 miles on the clock. Engine mount was a recall issue I understand but my OPC obviously didn't know, if that was the case.
Worse thing was the state of the light grey leather interior because they had left grime and oil all over - both seats, dash board, doors, carpet, appalling really. Phone call and complaint got an apology and an invitation to have it cleaned and they would refund me which they did. But nothing else, not even a bunch of flowers for my mrs for keeping her car and manking it up.
Always the worry they ragged it on the 100 miles of use they had out of it too, which of course was "road testing". After all, if they care little about how they treat the inside, they won't give a flying feck about how they drive it.
So first experience appalling, complaint to Porsche on their feedback form of course but have no confidence in my OPC now.

I put a GPS tracking in to my car
This one
ww.smarttrack.eu
I can monitor where the car is, how fast its travelling and see how hard they are reving it at all times. It sends me a SMS when it stats moving.
I also installed a dash camera, porsche sheffield have been really good with me and not abused my cars at all.

At 855.3 hours somebody took the car through rr 123 to rr 4. In my ownership is not under dispute but several hours before a service. Unfortunately I do not have a dash cam. The car has cobra vts tracker but not one that I can see the car on a moving map.Bert
Car was serviced at 858 running hours as per the val check on October 17
The reports from the porsche system only records at running hours, not a date as far as I am aware
My question did dubious, spurious, implausible rev range entry happen when i had left the car at an opc? Then just after service another ignition in rr 4 is recorded. The car gets about 4 gallons of fuel from the opc 3 days after the service. I have never seen them fuel a car for a customer when they are servicing and road testing a car.
I had to fuel the car when I picked it up on the Saturday. I have a bank record of that.
I did not record mileage in and out

That is a concern given that porsche gb say these are implausible, more rev ranges could go on the registers and another leak down test would be required for a future warranty to be issued. My experience has been to rely on the warranty as I have more than had my money's worth in the last 2 years. The car runs really well and pulls like a train. However, I would not have bought the car with a 5 and 6. There were over 50 cars to choose from when i was looking. I guess when I eventually sell it will be quite a tough campaign

So if the RR4 is indeed spurious (which it must by logic be), then there's no point in trying to chase the circs that caused it. I humbly suggest you are in paranoia land if you try to connect a spurious event to an OPC service to conclude they ragged your car. If you are worried about it for the future, get someone else to service your car.Car was serviced at 858 running hours as per the val check on October 17

If you are worried about it for the future, get someone else to service your car.

Bert as an international gentleman of mystery you may be qualified to diagnose my paranoia but perhaps you should read the porsche response and deal in facts. All they have said is the rev range 4, 5 and 6 are spurious. Therefore logic or paranoia suggest that the rev range 123 at 855 hours are indeed validBert
By virtue of this assumed validity somebody has ragged the arse off the car

So the car is fine, compression test done for nowt, warranty renewed, peace of mind, no affect on value, brakes needed doing anyway and discounted... end result sounds ok to me?
So you'd be happy for your dealer to be taking your car to the rev limiter when "road testing" would you? Because it seems pretty clear to me that this is what happened, cutting through the 'dubiety'.
tfest so let them deal with it.996GT2 said:
Anyone with a manual Porsche and a warranty should ask for DME print outs when the car is checked in and out of an OPC, it annoys them to have to do it but they created this over-rev s
