Something I've been pondering over for a few weeks.. Is it possible to have relatively cheap insurance on a cerb/chimera at 21? Seriously considering going for it in a few months...

You may get someone to cover you, but it won't be any of the specialist brokers who actually understand the rarity/value of these cars and their quirks and foibles. By that I mean the good brokers understand and are happy for owners to have modifications declared such as a good set of adjustable coilovers insured on a like-for-like basis. Admiral.co.uk will crap themselves at the prospect and load your already sky-high premium. If some wazzock runs up your backside in a well maintained and sorted Chim they will struggle to understand that you need specialist bodyshops etc, and may try to return you to crap OE parts someone's already spent good money upgrading. You won't get the trackday cover etc either.

There's no harm in asking the mainstream insurers though.

Hi there!

I'm 22 with my girlfriend as a named driver (also 22)

I have a standard admiral policy, fully comp comes in at just under £500. Both of us have been driving since we were 17 and have 5 years NCB, living in scotland helps too. Modifications can get expensive but they are generally good with minor ones what don't involve powwwaar.

I added both my parents as named drivers, this gives a £400 discount.

It is doable. I'd expect to pay over £1000 though from talking to other people on here.

Best thing to do is run a 400 chim through comparethemeerkat to see what happens and experiment with different things such as job title or parking on street/driveway and named drivers.

Not true. It will be very difficult but anything is possible with some patience and a little persistance. I insured my first Cerbera at 21 through a specialist (MSM) and it was the cheapest car I'd ever insured. Into my third year of insuring TVRs now and the Tuscan is now £400 cheaper per year than the Cerbera was originally.

I know people my age insuring Ford Fiestas for more than it costs me to insure the Tivs. Ridiculous but true.

When I was 25 and had a Tuscan, I reduced the policy by 50% by adding my mum as a named driver. Since then ive done it every year for some big savings

I would go through MSM here is the link http://www.msminsurance.co.uk/

used them for 2 years until I was 25 and cant fault them though I didnt make any claims, you can even have an agreed value with them. If/When you get one take it steady cool

Yes, no big tail slides on motorway slip roads, you might end up mating with a tree......don't you agree, Alex?

I insured my 1st at 19 but that was a very long time ago..

When my son turned 18 I checked to add him to one of mine (350i) and that was only £70 extra (5 years ago). It will be possible, cost and maybe excess likely to be issues. Good lucksmile

24 Tuscan S no no claims £1300, 25 1 year £800. I found the specialists wouldn't quote me so just went for a meerkat special. Surprisingly affordable compared to Jap turbo'd rubbish and yes you will need to change your username wink
