SLK250CDi economy - how high can you go?
Discussion
Not very PH, I know
I know a few of us on here have got the R172 250 diseasel SLK. I've always been amazed at the fueleconomy of mine, especially for what is definitely not a slow car.
Mine's done 12.5K miles now and is loosening up nicely. I do a 33 mile each way motorway commute and usually get low 60s mpg - however this morning I saw 68.8mpg
and I swear it would have hit 70mpg but for a queue at the end.
Anyone else cracked 70?

Excellent. You've just answered the Q I came on to find out! I am thinking of trading in my 2012 BMW 320d F30 for a new diesel SLK 250. My commute is more or less exactly the same as yours, 90% quiet motorway (M180), circa 30 miles each way. I am getting 55mpg in my BMW averaged over the 10,000 miles I have owned it. The car i Buy would have to be an improvement on this.
Can I ask what speeds you are driving at and whether you are deliberately doing economy runs, or just driving normally?

Best I've seen on my 25 commute to work is 58mpg. If it weren't for some traffic light controlled roundabouts at the end I might get 60mpg.
Though I can't imagine ever getting 60-70mpg consistently for my car use.
After 7000 miles I'm averaging 50mpg. Like you say, the economy isn't bad for the level of performance the car offers.
If I were to complain, I'd say that the economy drops away quite quickly in urban use. Much more so than other cars I've owned.

My average over 20k is 48.5 mpg but I have averaged 55 mpg over 612 miles for a tank, the trip that consisted most of that tank was happily into to the 60's.
Driven with consideration it is very economical, surprisingly so given the weight and performance available.
All brim to brim measures rather than the optimistic trip computer....

As a lurker ,can I say I have seen 21mpg in my 120d auto in London whereas mid lane motorway stuff 53-58mpgThough I can't imagine ever getting 60-70mpg consistently for my car use.

I disagree; try doing the same urban run in a 2 litre petrol; you won't be seeing 21mpg.Diesels do not like urban driving lol
I used to do an urban commute in my SL500, and was getting an average 5.8mpg

Like for like not all 55mpg (combined cycle) cars offer the same real world economy. I suspect that the auto box in the SLK is less efficient than diesel manuals in the urban cycle - again in the real world. I'm not really complaining about the car, just my observations
