Older 911 to use regularly
Discussion
Was looking at 997 turbos and selling the Aeromax, but decided to keep Morgan and get a car that would develop me as a driver, and hold its money instead whilst being passably practical in a pinch..
Requirements
Budget up to 40k.
Must have rear seats.
Shouldn't depreciate.
Fuel costs, insurance, servicing etc not a concern within reason..
Will be used 3 days a week and occasional weekend. Not sole transport though.
plan maybe 5 days a year on track with instructor to learn something and get more handy.
My short list
964 c2 manual (probably ideal but not many about)
993 c2s manual (worried its not raw enough and track work wouldn't be right for it but oh so pretty)
930 Turbo (massive soft spot for these)
911 sc (will it be fun on track?)
What would you pick? (And is this madness?)

There certainly aren't many manual 964 C2's out there (that haven't become an RS replica yet). That one sold though.
I'm tracking a couple that might come up and they look line a good blend of style and usability, but I do like the older shape and the research seems to suggest a sorted 3.2 is a pretty solid proposition.
Anyone here using their air cooled cars regularly? Taking little ones out occasionally? Are they pigs in the winter? (Mine will be garaged, but will get driven year round when sensible)..

i use my 930 pretty often, as it's such a good roadcar (it's a late '89 5 speed model with 60k miles and 2 owners before me) - it's got good a/c that keeps u cool in the summer and dry in the winter. it cruises on the motorway easily (clears the outside lane quite effectively too...) and it's perfectly docile in traffic. yes the clutch is heavy, but none of the ground clearance issues u might have with a GT3 in town and it's a doodle to park as it's so small (compared to a modern). kids sit in the back comfortably enough and lots of space for bags if no kids in toe. obviously it's a bit of a handfull if you are taking liberties in the wet, but no one forces you to drive like a journalist if it's spiky handling freaks you out.
just got back from a 330 mile trip back from Cornwall and it was perfectly comfortable. one thing that can become a bit tiresome is the amount of attention it gets with questions on petrol station forecourts and kids with camera phones etc, but it's all positive (unlike modern pork), people love it and see it as a classic now (ie you the driver is an enthusiast, not a rich t
t), which i suppose it is.
it is catagorically not a track car however - too heavy and blunt. bear that in mind.

Ive had pretty much all variants of 911 back to an SC. I have used them for weekend drives, euro trips and also need to get my 2.5 year old in the car.
I also do a few track days.
I recently bought a 993c2 with a lot of modifications and am selling it because it feels more of a GT car. I sold a lovely 3.2 to get the 993 and Im now going back to an earlier car. If you get one and all the components are in good working order its no worse to live with than a 993 without AC but feels more raw in terms of steering and braking.
Make sure the heating works properly, the brakes and suspension are in good working order. A suspension refresh which costs a lot less on a 3.2 and earlier, will transform the car.

Encouraging -responses - thanks folks.
Hope to see a few examples tomorrow, will feed back on what I find.
Just a thought - anyone got 3 point belts in the back of an SC or 930? Assume it can be done without having an adverse impact on the car?
Mine does, doubtful on early cars.Hope to see a few examples tomorrow, will feed back on what I find.

Been looking around, and seen a few now, an enjoyable process so far.
Dropped the Turbo idea, its a fantastic car, but for everyday it's too much for what i want, and for the track it doesn't really make sense. Also probably boosts the running costs for no real return on the road for what I will be doing.
Seen a couple of SC's and a nice 964 c2 but got distracted by an early car that has had a solid restoration job and a 3.0l engine swap (was a 2.7) on a 76 plate, seems clean and well loved - around 150k on the clock...
I really love the chrome and the shape overall, and with the 3.0 engine it should be quick enough to be fun, but not too much of a handful. Given its not got its original period correct enginge is this a bad idea or doesn't that matter? Appreciate a few thoughts..

I'd say that '76 converted to 3.0L is a great idea. Should be fine provided you are not paying a matching-numbers-all-original-car premium. The 2.7 was a bit s
te and the 3.0 is far better. Should happen to all IB 2.7s!Bert
PS does it have chrome?

I know the car as I drove it recently on my search. Lovely thing, brakes need sorting and I think a bit pricey for what it is but I loved it anyway.Dropped the Turbo idea, its a fantastic car, but for everyday it's too much for what i want, and for the track it doesn't really make sense. I would agree its maybe a little pricey too, there are other cars out there for less, and the colour scheme won't be for everyone.
It has chrome.
The brakes do not inspire confidence - glad you mentioned that - was concerned 'they all do that sir'!
Lets see what happens.
They do say don't buy the first car you see, but this one was and I've looked at a few more and I keep coming back to it as the most fun.

That car has a lot going for it, and Im sure with a brake service it would be 100% better. Thats definitely not normal. It has chrome.

Love the non sunroof and the colour combo is lovely. If you could get that a bit cheaper I reckon you would be smiling everyday you got in it.
The only reason I didnt buy it was because I bought something else there that fit my requirements slightly better.
