I'd go this way myself, but it'll add about 2 hours to the M40/M42/M6/M54 motorway route!

Nah, M40,M6,M54 then bit of A5 to Nesscliffe then turn left towards Knockin and take the fantastic B4396 then B4391 up and over The Berwyn mountains (fantastic views from the top)
Down into Bala then A4212 up and towards llyn Celyn then take the B4391 (Again , and this is the best bit of all ) and head to Llan Ffestiniog and on to join the A470 again at Maentwrog. Follow the road past Porthmadog on the new By-pass and take in fabulous views of Snowdon and then follow the coast down to Pwhelli .
Absolute nirvana and about 3 and a half hours with little or no traffic.
