I was tempted by this car i have to say.
The advert reads well and appears to be honest.
Price aside its still been written off & though relative re the values (buy cheap-sell cheap) it would always be in the back of my mind that its a write off at the end of the day.
You pays your money and take the chances as they say.

That's what I thought. I've nothing against CatD's in general, provided they're priced right, but as 997 GT3's with similar milage seem to be £50k-ish (e.g. lovely black clubsport with 18k miles for £51,900), I'd say £45k was too much in the first place, so this 'reduction' to £40k is really just pricing it where it should have been in the first place, and therefore does not make it a bargain.
For me, I'd be scrimping (and living off beans on toast if I had to), just to get me into the black one, but then again, if you've got £40k max to play with, and it's a keeper(?) perhaps it might be a reasonable buy at £40k.
I have owned Cat D and I only thought about it the day I bought it and the day I sold it. You can get it inspected by Autolign which tells you what was done and gets it from being "Cat D" to "Cat Inspected". It doesn't remove the cat D stigma entirely, but gives you and a future buyer an understanding of whether the car is good or not.
If it is a good car and checks out, the only thing left is the economics. It has to be the right price to buy, own and sell. I think it looks a great car. If it checks out and the price can be moved into the late 30's it would start to look very attractive. 10k miles!

I kind of agree with where you are coming from, but do consider that Porsche body shops will cut out whole quarter panels and replace when the panel could actually have been pulled and resolved by a skilled man with the right hammer. Porsche also work to a 3 figure labour rate which can always be beaten by a smaller bodyshop. Further - the insurance repair valuation may include a suitable luxury car rental for the repair duration which can jack up the price ever further. So while your point is sound it must be considered that cost to an insurer to get to their write-off threshold may be significantly different to what a competent and sound repair can be done for. Knowing exactly what it was like before they started fixing it is the information that you need to appraise that though and it is often not forthcoming as there is an obvious incentive to misrepresent it.lotus211 said:

I have a red gt3 with a sunroof as well, that advert made me look closely when I first saw it, mine is full touring spec with adaptive sports seats, leather dash, nav, cruise, leather steering wheel, it's even got a Gt3 umbrella!I just need to find the time to do some bloody touring now.

So, you'd try to sell it after a year? At which point it would stick in the ads for ages and be discussed at length on the forums.....
I can understand buying an undervalued, properly repaired, car as a keeper. Selling it will always be a nightmare, even more so if you're seen as offloading it soon after buying. I think you'd have a real problem there: a year is just long enough for potential buyers to think you've whacked it in for an annual service, found a load of problems, and are looking to sell it fast.

Fair enough, but I'd really hate to be selling a car with "history", that I'd only owned a short time. You'll be trying to sell a car that's a write-off, with the added stigma that you don't think it's worth keeping. I'd say you'll be losing £10K over a single year on that car. Buying a good one you could turn it around for what you paid in a year's time.
Every Cat D ad says 'just bumpers'. its become a bit of a joke really.
Still, it doesnt mean its not worth a look. But really, its likely to have had a proper wack. Who knows how good the repair is or what evils lurk beneath.
And dont forget the mechanicals, engines are often over revved during shunts and even forced to turn in reverse.
Lots of care needed as usual.

If you take the time to read the ad fully, you'll see that the car was written off due to the quote from the OPC to repair post-prang. I think the seller has been quite honest IMO. If I had the readies I'd be beating a path to his door at that price, plus, it does have an OPC warranty, so it's one independant inspection away from being a done deal
