focus st mk2 fan always on?! help/advice please
Discussion
as titled
recently bought a ford focus st1 2.5 turbo in blue. ive mainly been a ford and bmw man all my life having 20+ cars (mainly 6cyl bmws) i decided to try a focus st as i found my old st170 2004 a bit gutless after several 328i e36s and 330ci sports
3 door lovely condition just replaced the front under tray the part that goes under the radiator/front bumper as it was fractured and parts of it were missing
ever since ive had it when i turn the engine off i notice the sound of the engine fan(s) running down to a stop.... its annoying because i know the car IS NOT oerheating its temperature is not obscure in anyway
this is my next thing to rectify so wondering if anybody has any advice on where the coolant temp sensor is on these volvo engined focus's ?
thanks again

Don't know about other Fords but on the Focus turning the airflow direction selector clockwise round to full demist automatically switches on the aircon. Confusingly the indicator light on the a/c switch doesn't illuminate.
Turning the selector slightly anti-clockwise switches off the a/c and at idle the revs drop slightly.

Are you sure its the fan running, as my focus (07) it had a sound like that.
When i first got it, i had a look if the fan was running, but it wasn't.
I turn the car off and then i hear something spin down.
I think its the alternator, so did the spanner man, but it is charging fine, so i have just lived with it.

I presume your on about the cooling fan not the heater fan ?
If so you have a problemo. Ive only had mine come on once since ive had it. These engines seem to run pretty cool.
Be 100% sure the car is not getting to hot. Turn the car on from stone cold, run for 2 min. Is the fan on when you turn ign off ?
If no run the car see what temp the fan kicks in.
If yes check if the fan is on when the engine is runnig and not when you just turn ign off. Id imagine it will be on when the car is running.
Sounds like you have a electrical problem and the fan is just kicking in to soon. On a older car id say just fit a new switch. However these days id expect its a bit more complicated than that. I know on our trucks we can program the temp when the fan kicks in, i presume you can on the Focus to maybe thats been changed.
You could get it pluged into a machine that will probably tell you. Or if it was me id fit a switch anyway, see what happens.

Alternator has a clutch on the pulley so it will run on when the engine is shut down but this shouldn't be doing this for very long after shut down (seconds if that) plugging a diag machine in & checking the live data is a good idea as is physically checking the fan is actually on
Yes its only a few seconds, listen to an 08 today that had the same spin down noise.Shadow R1 said:
