When cornering spiritedly (predominantly right hand bends) my car (997.2 GT3) began to make the strangest of noises! The only way to describe it is that it was like a loud ratcheting/clicking/pinging noise when the steering/car was under load during cornering. Nothing felt amiss through the steering I must add - it all felt perfectly normal.

Having covered <15k (predominantly road use) the car went off to the OPC for investigation. Thankfully the fault could be readily reproduced but the technicians had never heard a noise like it before. After several runs with the 'chassis ear' (apparently a mic taped to the chassis components to help pinpoint and record noises) the NS wheel bearing has been replaced. Apparently this has now cured the fault.

I must add that the wheel bearing did not make a constant groaning/grinding noise typical of most wheel bearing failures and the technicians state that the symptom/noise was unique.

Another good use of the warranty me thinks but it was definitely one of those unique faults which manifests itself with the strangest of symptoms.

At least the wheel didn't fall off!

Had an identical issue with mine, 997.2, first noticed during laps of the handling circuit at PEC and on Silverstone. Heard the ratcheting noise on left and right tuns but didn't feel anything through the steering. Instructor in the car had never heard this before and had no explanation.
This was in July, hot weather, about 11k miles on the car.

Decided to investigate further once home. Front wheels off and blew all the dust and grit off the suspension mounts and bushes then gave everything a good coating with WD40. Test drive revealed no more ratcheting noise as the steering loaded up.

Did you see the your old wheel bearing? Would have to be in bad shape to cause this kind of noise? I reckon when the OPC changed the bearing all the suspension got a good clean up and that is what has cured the noise.

Might of course be speaking complete rubbish, but it seems to of cured mine, then again I haven't been able to replicate exactly the same conditions as at PEC when it was first noticed.

Certainly sounds like the same fault doesn't it? Wasn't convinced by the wheel bearing explanation to be honest. As you say it's likely that the work done to replace the bearing has affected the original state of the suspension through physical cleaning or disturbance. Really disconcerting noise though!

Haven't got the car back yet and probably won't get to see the wheel bearing that was removed.

Impressed that you whipped your wheel off. The centrelocks certainly complicate the task of taking a wheel off for cleaning/inspection etc!

Jase.

With the right tools centre locks are easy! I have a Norbar 5:1 torque multiplier. Did my GTS wheels several times for cleaning and swapping to winter tyres. GT3 just the same. Got a lesson from a Tech at Aberdeen OPC and never had a problem, although a little nerve wracking the first time. Wheels have stayed anyway so must be a good sign!

Do you need someone standing on the brakes to overcome the initial torque?
