Curing surface rust

On Sunday I will pick up my first TVR, a 98 Chimaera which is beautiful but has some evidence of surface rust on the chassis, as seen while looking in engine compartment.

The 'current' owner has not had the body treated with waxoil or the like. I would really like to tackle this myself then probably have the whole frame waxoiled professionally. I want to avoid the expence of taking it to a TVR dealer (my local dealer is in Henley, friendly but very expensive).

What advice can you offer? Is there a particularly good Car restoration for dummies that you could recommend?

Sounds like you got the right words, do a search using waxoil, or rust etc, that should bring you up some threads that will answer your questions.

The “bible” (The TVR Griffith and Chimaera, second edition by Steve Heath – I just got it from TVRCC) has a section regarding “Hammerite” and “Waxoyl” treatments for the chassis.

Member called “Shnozz” has just done it himself.

I have access to a pit and I will do it myself (I did a couple of my cars at home many years ago – Capri and Herald – both rust buckets when I bought them). Plus, I am very tight and begrudge paying money for something that I could do myself, even though I regret it later.

Hi Tacoma - congratulations on your new purchase.

I took the plunge myself very recently - haven't looked back or lost the ridiculous grin since!

Thanks very much for the excellent answers. I have ordered the Steve Heath 'bible' and will look at taking the car off the road for a couple of weekends to progressively work on the rust.

I have heard and read a lot of good things about waxoyl and have a couple of tins in the garage but i will visit the Frost site and look at the other products available. In the end I might do both. I am not sure how bad the problem will be yet as i haven't got under the car.

The Previous owner seems like a good guy and has owned the car from new but he did not have the car treated at all so hopefully there will be something left to salvage. Ill keep you informed, and thanks again i really appreciate you taking the time to reply.

For reference, I've "done both" - POR15 and Waxoyl underseal. I'd agree that anywhere underbonnet the Waxoyl does melt, and looks (and is) messy. However, its pretty sure to be giving good protection so I'm happy!
