According to the back of the Bus in the traffic earlier on:

"Gary the Paramedic believes Speeding drivers are Selfish"

Gary has attended many fatal accidents caused by Speed Drivers.

Mrs S's dad's mate (tenuous link I know).. looked at that advert, saw the chaps name badge

"Gary Paramedic"

His simple response...

He didn't have much of a choice for his career did he..

I found that entertaining, the good lady looked at me, somewhat confused.

I must admit that tickled me. Even in my slightly drunk state. If I see that again with someone in the car, I will definatly steal that joke.

What did that mean Turbo Bloke??

It meant that, IMHO, your comment would apply not just in a nice way but any way. I wasn't feeling very charitable towards the Essex SCAMP after reading that emotive crap in the advert, that's all

No offence taken, maybe I should have added more to the original comment but it was just my natural reaction..in a nice way yes okay, but in any way. I totally agree with the spirit of your post

It was emotive crap with no real statistical substance though. Surely a drunk / drugged driving advert would be more suitable. Just a thought.

Yep. When road deaths are up nationally in spite of more cameras than ever, the only stats they could use would be the usual selective and misleading kind. Emotion is a powerful propaganda tool, which is why 'they' use it all the time to try and influence people into believing that cameras and traps save lives, when all they do is raise revenue.

So more people support it and ask for more scamera's. Smart stuff, wish more people would cotton onto it rather than believing what they read on buses

Besides, if Gary the Paramedic says I'm selfish for doing 80 on the M25 (when thats possible) who am I to argue.

Paramedics do a great job but their role is being abused in this type of advert, just like the families of road accident victims - often the accident had nothing to do with speed but, like you say, a drunk or drugged driver but they want everyone to believe speed was the reason.

Dont get me wrong, in no way am I criticising paramedics. Both my parents and my Step mother have been in nursing for around 100 years between them but like you say, he is being used to get an emotive message accross.

A lot of Essex Traf Pol about at the moment aswell..... dont know why though.

A lot of trafpol? Unusual, just had to drive a family member to work on their night shift and like every other time I can't remember seeing a patrol car. BUT... When there are a few laxxed cars in town for a cruise we get road blocks, transit vans at the entrance to every car park, a CCTV van recording everything, loads of car patrols and more beat officers, and then the copper chopper whirring overhead spending all those speeding fines. You'd think Osama Bin Liner was in town. Usually some poor sod gets nailed for italic plates or neons or some other crime against humanity. Like many posting on this forum I'd prefer more trained trafpol on the roads to any number of GATSOs and talivans, especially if they use a bit of common sense over when to issue tickets.

OT:

Why are they called 'Para' medics?

I understand paratrooper, ala parachute.

Does para mean 'all encompassing' in this instance, like paraplegic?

I think so, yes.

Supposed to handle pretty much anything for the cruical first hour or so, until the casuality can be handed over to specialist medics.

Yes I totally agree with you (as may of you all know I am a Paramedic) If my bosses asked me to do an advert like that for speeding I would tell them to off and find some othe mug, however if it was about drink driving I would possibly think about it. and turbo bloke is right most accidents have bollocks all to do with speed but as said with drink and drugs.
